ProCal tune octane needed

Considering using the tune but I'm concerned about the octane needed to avoid detonation. 93 is hard to find in the sticks (Arkansas) with 91 at most places BUT - it's nearly $1.00 per gallon more. 89 is readily available as mid grade and not nearly as expensive. How critical is using Premium in avoiding detonation or can the computer avoid it if I use mid grade? Thanks!!!

If you can't get or don't want to pay for 91-93, unless you want the other features the tune includes, don't get the tune. (To get what FP advertises, it has to be 93.) You won't get the additional HP and torque without it. You can still run 87-89, the knock preventer will take over. So if that's what you want it for, it'd be a waste of money.

Yeah, @userdude is correct. The vehicle will automatically de-tune based on information it receives from the sensors. But the tune profile itself only kicks in at 91+ octane.

So if you are buying the Performance Tune only to use it with 87/89 octane, then it's almost like lighting money on fire.

The new engine control software gives you the ability to spend more money ongoing in higher octane fuel.

Now, the FP tune also adjusts the automatic transmission--everyone seems to say for the better. So there's that.

If there's zero harm in using 87 day to day, but now and then or in the summer or whatever you want to put 93 in to get the full power, that's up to you.

Oh, fair. Manual transmission guy so I always forget about the transmission.

Is it any different than just sticking the vehicle in sport mode?? Kinda doubt it, but never experienced it first hand.

I do like the trans update. Whether someone wants to pay for that and disabling ASS (if it still does??)...

I wish I knew. But I love sport mode regardless.

Anecdote: this past weekend we drove a couple hours out on the freeway. We started with a full tank. I left the cruise control on for 70, and only a few times did I have to interrupt it to slow down or speed up to pass a slower truck. MPG gauge showed 18.2 at the end of the trip.

We drove around locally a small bit, then filled up with gas, then came back. This time, no cruise control; I blasted through traffic at generally 80-85mph, sometimes 90+, but generally cruising north of 80mph.

THIS time, the MPG gauge showed 20.9.

Sport mode all the way, but it was freeway driving. I have to wonder if the sport mode had anything to do with that, or if the auto trans is in a sweeter spot at higher speeds... ("but officer, I'm just trying to save gas...")

The flip side of those advising to not tune, I say go for it, as it's all relative to your baseline.

In CA I can only get 91. My Raptor runs about 25 hp less than the factory stated 418 on 91 instead of 93. That is estimated from actual timed launches. I have the FP Tune and have run it on 91, 93 and 95 (the latter two via ethanol blending). The tune more than makes up for the deficit from 91 octane (i.e. is over 418 hp) and feels fantastic on 93 and higher.

In short, regardless of what fuel you use, you'll get benefits from the tune. My guess is that even on 87 or 89 the gains will be quite noticeable.

I also expect the hp gain from 89->93 would exceed that of the tune.

I installed the FP tune Nov. 24th, and ASS stays in previous mode. So it's working for me.

My guess would be headwind/tailwind. I know when I was younger, drives into Indianapolis I would get like 26MPG. On the way back I would get about 19. (this wasn't in a Bronco).

ASS/RevMatch supposedly deleted only for MY23 and newer. For whatever reason.
