Mostly agree with you in spirit. It’s kinda why I like driving my 2 door base. Definitely has that tossable feel compared to just about any current vehicles. The 2-door manual base should handle and accelerate really well because it's not carrying the weight. On my (stripped) '24 Big Bend (the equivalent of the base last year) I was astonished at how fast and thrashable it was. To me, this is the original spirit: light, nimble, short wheelbase, manual transmission. With a Ford Performance tune, you can hit 0-60 in less than 7 seconds. Improve the intake, exhaust and intercooler and you're in the low 6 second range (and getting over 20MPG to boot).
It adds up to a vehicle that doesn't need the lockers, big tires and lifts if you know how to drive it (for most scenarios). We knew that going back to the original Willys. Scrappy, durable - less to go wrong, fun to drive, cheaper to buy, cheaper to drive, cheaper to repair. Another plus is that its original 2-door body design remains unmolested: simple and truly authentic.
Outside of crawling on the western trails, if you are in a situation where this simple Bronco can't get you where you want to go, you probably shouldn't be out in it.
Well done!
I certainly agree with you! I really, really miss my 1988 YJ. It had all those wonderful attributes in spades. Sure, those leaf springs would beat you to death, it was cheap and plastiky, it shook and rattled, it was drafty, it rusted, etc. But I loved it.Mostly agree with you in spirit. But - this thing is still a bloated pig in comparison to any jeeps from YJ and earlier.
you will get better gas mileage with the stock ones.Pardon me while I laugh at this!
Are they ever really done?
a hood deflector here
a bull bar there
some tires with a more rugged look
maybe some slider/steps to stop the rock chips
gotta have that stubby antenna
Congrats, at any rate!!
Ya have to love them Bases though!
I ran 35's on mine for a few years, currently I'm back to the stock wheels and rubber.
Just wanted to change the look for awhile. Found myself eyeballing all the stockers whenever I would see one.

shouldn't be out in it????? You mean like the time I got my 73 cj5 v8 stuck then walked back and got in my vw bug and friend to help and went after the jeep. Had to go through a mud hole in the bug and my stomach was fluttering hit the mud and the sky disappeared for a couple of seconds as the muddy water went over the bug but it kept going. Got to the jeep hooked up a strap and the jeep with the bug pulling gently came right out of there. The one and only time i ever used a bug to pull anything out but they were good in the dirt..The 2-door manual base should handle and accelerate really well because it's not carrying the weight. Yes. My dad and I restored a 1929 Model A years ago. I remember when we'd take it out on trips, all the old guys said those skinny tires were great in the snow, and if you could get momentum the Model A could climb over things a modern car couldn't. Turns out the old guys were right. Also, like your VW, I had an old 1960 Corvair that was practically unstoppable in the snow due to its rear engine and skinny tires. You don't forget stuff like that.shouldn't be out in it????? You mean like the time I got my 73 cj5 v8 stuck then walked back and got in my vw bug and friend to help and went after the jeep. These new 2dr Broncos should do a great job. It seems to me Ford thought of everything when they put these together. I would like to see the 3cylinder engine added to the Bronco to improve fuel efficiency which is more important off road than tons of HP. Aint no gas stations in remote areas. HP is just for fun and just means less mpg and more chance of breaking something
Sure don't. When i decided to use the Bug I new it had a flat smooth bottom so would plane in water and mud but it still surprised me when it went under water for a few seconds and kept on going without any hesitation. My neighbor that went with me after that he started buying bug and using them on the beach and in the sand mud. He really thought they were Gods gift to off road.Yes. I didn't even notice it was a raptor thread I responded to, new 25 base@Administrator can we move this thread to a non-Raptor forum?
.... and just like that, the dude hits hero status. Lol!Inside every Raptor is a base yearning to be set free.....
yes, they were the rage in the 60's. Do they make them anymore?I have a 22 2Dr Base, but swapped the steelies for OBX rims/tires. For a while I was looking for those moon covers for my steelies,,, but didn't find any. That's how I remember the original 60s/70s Broncos. Does anyone else remember (or was that a one-off that I remember somebody putting on. I think they're called "baby moons").
