In the state of New Jersey you can't legally modify a car to be louder than designed but since Auto inspections in NJ are a joke these days it is pretty much unenforced. Technically though a cop could pull you over for noise if exhaust alterations are suspected. There are municipal noise ordinances in some towns as well.

" N.J.S.A. 39:3-70 requires every motor vehicle with a combustion engine to have a functioning muffler in good working order to prevent excessive noise, prohibiting muffler cut-outs, bypasses, or similar devices on highways "

"highways" in legal lingo is any road in NJ

Based on what you posted, having a loud muffler is fine. NJ (being the asshole state that it is) is basically saying you can't run straight pipes without having a muffler. Having a muffler is the key here, as long as one exists, you are fine. I've heard plenty of loud mufflers on the roads. Then again, give it time, they'll find a way to outlaw them as well eventually.

In Cal, it is very rare to get pulled over for loud exhaust. Then, it would need to be extremely loud and probably accompanied by speeding.

Back in the 70s when CHP had safety road stop checks, I got pulled into one with my V8 that had dual exhaust and burned out glass packs. I was asked to rev it up and I gingerly did. I was given a fix-it ticket. I had a friend that was a cop and he signed it off and I continued on with the burned out glass packs for many years with no problem in Cal.

A few years later in my small home town in Kansas I got pulled over for loud exhaust but I had floored it in low gear and let it wrap down in low gear in a 30 mph speed zone. Very loud and stupid, but I loved it back then. The city cop was a friend I went to school with for 12 years. He scolded me a little and let me go with a warning to keep it down.

Never mind doing the right thing, lets piss off our neighbors and everyone else on the road by running loud exhaust. This is the reason laws are enacted and the police are forced to get involved. Its also the reason why the reputation of Mustang owners and perhaps increasingly Bronco owners is, well pretty bad.

My 392 would be screwed. I turn the exhaust off when I'm pulling out of my neighborhood in the AM or late at night at least. Anyway, loud is what I assume this is about - not clicking on their video so they can rack up views - not like my one view would matter, but eh.

I own a hellcat. The exhaust is 2x Louder than my raptor in Baja mode exhaust. When ford warns you it’s not legal on the street imo is a gimmick. It’s not that loud at all. My hellcat shakes the ground it’s so loud. My garage windows shake at startup

Late to the party, but this, where written, would be a POP offense. Pissing Off Police will always bring unwanted attention...

From that initial screen capture I was going to say that is the TALLEST cop in the world if he was standing next to a Raptor... Pretty obvious that the pic is nota Raptor. Either that or he was standing on box etc.

Then you scroll down and notice it's a Lambo.

Sport mode meets DOT requirements. Baja mode does not. Thus the warning that says Off-Road use only when you use it.

Any cop will have a hard time proving that I was in Baja on the street anyway. It's their uncalibrated ears against my word. "I was in Sport mode Your Honor which is Factory DOT approved"

The whole "loud" thing puzzles me. Why is it so important to "go loud"? Having been around loud stuff all my life (and now slowly losing my hearing and slowly going deaf) I look back and wish I had taken hearing protection more seriously.

When inside and firing the main gun of a tank it's not loud at all. But outside the tank or even sitting in the tank next to the one firing...? Very loud. Do people not realize that it's quieter inside the vehicle for the driver and much louder for those outside? Perhaps they do know and that's part of the whole "getting your rocks off" thing. But why do we all have to share in the experience? Same with Harley drivers. Bottom line, annoying.

Sorry, not a fan of those big diesels or sports cars or whatever/whomever who see public highways as their personal drag strips however much I'm a fan of "American Graffiti" or "L'il Deuce Coupe."

Comment made, this Boomer/retired Army Cav Scout (where "quieter and not being seen is better") will now bow out.

There are states that have strict sound level laws. Most of the time cops do not enforce it. Bad timing for that bugger.

Loud while driving is a narcissistic “look at me” action with sadistic “hahaha, caused you trouble” feelings thrown in.

Just as bad is spreading an idiotically fake post photo.

… California has been increasingly changing laws and fines…

Since 2023 cities have added Sound Cameras; L.A., San Diego, San Jose, San Francisco, Glendale, and Oxnard

Looks like the officers uniform is city of Glendale

Seems other states too
https://dubmagazine.com/2025/12/24/exhaust-noise-laws-1000-dollar-fines-car-culture-2026/

Noise is not limited to exhaust, total noise created by the vehicle…

Anyone fine the knob to turn down the fake engine noise? Don’t want a ticket. lol
