I've been looking into possible mods to do, and an oil catch can keeps popping up as one that's recommended. After trying to do some research, it seems like there are various third-party options as well as a Ford Performance option. Where I start to get confused, however, is it seems like the Ford Performance option installs on a completely different part of the engine compared to the others. I don't know nearly enough about how these work to try and understand if one is better than the other. Would love some insight from anyone who knows more than I do about this.

I’ve done that, which is how I learned what I mentioned in my post. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to find a clear explanation as to why the Ford one is so different. Hence my original post.

2 sides to the system. In a post, in a thread somewhere, is an illustration showing that Ford has a separator on the side of the block that vents back into the oil pan. The FP Air/Oil Separator is on the other side of the system. From the valve cover back to the airflow pre-turbo.

Thanks. Is there any consensus as to which approach is better?

There are many guys that bypassed the "vent to oil pan" and used either UPR or Mishimoto catch cans instead with good results. Caught significant residues. The FP AOS system I believe guys have had mixed results. Personally, I have the FP system and have caught vapor residues. I feel my choice is worth it. Read all the threads. Good explanations. Opinions vary.

FWIW, I have the Ford Performance and the J&L oil separator. Both work as advertised. The J&L always has a puddle in the bottom of the can every time I change the oil at the 5k mark. In the colder months you definitely get more than in the summer.

The Ford Performance one also works, it just does not accumulate near as much as the J&L does. Easy to open up, clean, and re assemble though.
