Cam Phasor Rattle..?

It's crazy that they have to remove the engine for this. Taking off valve covers to get to the cams/rockers/etc should not require engine removal.

From start to taking off the cam phasers on a Jeep 3.6 takes like 2 hours. (One side)

Just because they're both V6's, doesn't exactly make that a similar comparison. A Jeep 3.6 is quite a bit different then a 2.7 Ecoboost

You can't get the 2.7 phasers off without removing the front cover which is the issue. Removing the front engine cover requires removal of the engine.

Oh no doubt they are different... didn't know about the front cover, that explains it. Just goes to show how different things have gotten with modern vehicles. (Jeeps are modern-ish but the 3.6 really isn't)

I mean you watch some of these off-road guys on YouTube, they can basically just unclip the front end on a rig in an hour and get to just about the entire engine.

At the rate things are going, you're going to have to pull the body off to do a spark plug change in a few years (assuming we're still allowed to have spark plugs)

Had my ‘22 Wildtrak for a few weeks and started smelling the odor that I read is “normal.” But before reading about it, I popped the hood to see if odor was stronger in engine bay. This is when I noticed the engine “rattling” while idling. After a couple minutes at idle, the engine “settles” into what I would say is a more normal idle. I’m posting a 10 second video that demonstrates the rattle shift at 5 seconds. Would like to know your thoughts…

I took it to dealership and after two days, they said they didn’t hear anything unusualAND that the video wasn’t helpful or clear? The shift in sound in the video is exceptionally clear and noticeable.

I told them that if you’re telling me it’s normal, that’s one thing, but if you’re telling me it’s not noticeable, that’s just untrue which makes me nervous that it’s being ignored…

I had a 3.5 that had the cam phasers replaced. The rattle was louder and more pronounced for a shorter amount of time than your video. Could be the different engines. Yours sounds like a turbo flutter to me.

That video sounds pretty normal to me. Sounds like it just switches from high idle to a lower idle. They are naturally a little loud. Cam phaser rattle only happens for the first 2-3 seconds of cold start. It’s a completely different sound.

This is exactly how mine sounds. When you first start the engine, it is in OPEN loop (smog crap) and sounds like it's about to fall apart. After a few, You can literally hear things click in the engine quiets down... A little bit after, and the idle comes down.

If you prime the oil pump before do a cold start, you'll instantly be able to determine if it's cam phasers or not. Priming the pump does not get rid of the closed loop noise but it does get rid of the cam phase rattle.

As a matter of fact, a lot of vehicles that put engine covers on having insulation under them specifically to quiet down the noise. With a Bronco not having any engine cover, you hear all the fuel injectors, etc.

I just came to the conclusion that these 2.7s are noisey.

Open loop at start up, then goes into closed loop when the converters and O2 sensors are warmed up, but you are correct.
And like you mentioned, priming the oil system is a good way of determining if it is phaser rattle or normal warm up engine noise

Took almost 3 weeks for them to work out the details with Fore Corporate. Car has 500 miles on it so buyback/lemon law was an option. Then yeah the parts were back ordered took them 2 weeks to come in. 1 Week to do the job. Had a crappy Lincoln loaner.

I have mine back after 23 days at the dealership. Initial observation is everything is good. A few days were added after finding a coolant hose had a leak when putting it back together; parts needed ordered. The part list on the invoice was large.

My garage smells of silicone after getting it home. I suppose that’s to be expected with the gaskets replaced, but I’ll keep a sharp eye on things for awhile.

Did you pick up your bronco from dealer? If so, is it all good now? I have 22 wildtrak with 5500 miles and it just started to make the cam phaser rattle . Not a fan of having my 65k truck tore apart being so new.
