Cam Phasor Rattle..?

Curious to see if your issue has been resolved since the repair was done. Mine is doing the exact same thing in my 2.7L. My dealer has also never done the cam phaser on a Bronco, so I'll be sure to mention that they may need to take the engine out. They can't get to mine until January.

Thank you for posting and updating. Solid information. Mine has 8K on now. Such a bummer to have this with a brand new car.

I’ve put 5k miles on it since then, mostly off road. Engine runs absolutely flawless. It’s been amazingly reliable for the first 10,000 miles other than that issue.

10/10 would do repair again.

Late to the party on this one. Picked up my new BRaptor mid November. Not my daily driver so not much for miles. About 4 weeks and 450ish miles later I get this same rattle. On a Saturday of course when I was going to go drive her around a bit. Scared to drive it due to this noise I have never experienced before. Bear in mind that in the last few years I have owned a 2019 F150 Raptor 3.5 with no issues, a 2021 Bronco First Edition 2.7 with no issues, and a 2020 Edge ST 2.7 with no issues so to say I was shocked, surprised, and disappointed that my $80k rig is having issues with only around town miles on it is an understatement. Nauseous is a better word. Called a local dealer on Monday and emailed them video of the startup and they immediately told me it was CAM Phasers and that the 2.7 Bronco's have a TSB on them. Most likely this was the case with the 3.0 as well. They contacted Ford and have yet to hear back. Today makes 5 days.. I got on the chat with Ford and their response was "call the dealership". I am not going to ding the quality and go down that road as this is my first issue with a Ford EVER! I just want quicker responses and a resolution. Come on Ford!! Help me get my BRaptor fixed. Doesn't sound like the cam phasor rattle that the 3.5 has in my F-150...pop the hood and see if the sound is higher, lower, front, back? Almost sounds like a heat shield rattle, but strange that it just goes away.

A trick to eliminating the cam phasors being possible is 'dry start' the engine for a few seconds by holding down the gas pedal to the floor, and release the gas pedal so it starts. See if it makes the same noise. This method will 'prime' the engine with oil, which is why the cam phasors in the 3.5 rattle and need to be replaced, lack of oil during start-up.

Same here on my 3.5 F-150. This sounds more like my JD Tractor start up.

It's safe to drive, just sounds like crap on start up. Mine has been rattling for 16,000 miles and all the sudden it stopped rattling a few hundred miles ago, which has me more worried than before. I do have a February date for repair.

This started on mine at ~9k miles on the odometer. It's going to the dealer on Monday to be diagnosed. Glad to find this thread, and I'm hopeful the parts are more readily available. I don't want to be driving like this for months, nor do I want a loaner for that long!

What is it with Ford and cam phasors? Seems like every multi-cam V engine they have built (with the exception of the 427 SOHC maybe) has had this problem.

@Theherofails Did you get any pushback on this? My dealership is telling me the noise lasts for such a short time they cannot diagnose it. And while they agree it sounds like cam phasers they have no engineering notes of that affecting this engine. Thus they cannot repair under warranty. Then they’re telling me it’s safe to drive, if it’s cam phasers, after telling me it’s not diagnosable! Madness.

Bingo, and why I ruled out the 2.7 from day one. I've been bit before and learned my lesson.

Update on mine. After butting heads briefly with the service advisor, I let him know they could keep it as long as it took to diagnose and everyone was happy. They have confirmed it is cam phasers and have ordered the parts. Once the parts are in they'll get me scheduled, and warned me they are scheduling 2- 3 months out on engine work of this nature. They also informed me the engine would need removed, which matches what others have said.

Not happy about this dragging out so long; the Bronco continues to teach me patience!

Yep. Whole engine comes out. Took my dealership 4 days in total to fix it.

My engine feels like it produces more power now that it’s fixed.

Only issue I had after was Ford techs forgot to hook a few grounds back up where they attach to the firewall so I had intermittent check engine lights for a bit until I opened the hood and saw them flapping in the breeze.

Edit/Update:

It is indeed the cam phasers rattling on startup.

It's a 'cosmetic' issue (safe to still drive with the noise on startup) that effects several different Ecoboost engines.

Dealership is ordering parts to repair.

I believe this sound has been there the entire time and recently gotten louder/more noticeable over the general engine start noise. Always lasts about 1 second during a cold start (~1 hour between starts) and then the vehicle drives excellent. No other issues. Vehicle did some Baja stuff yesterday with no issues.

If you kill the engine and restart, its not there.

My only guess is cam phasor rattle? Is it just the fuel injection system? Sounds.. not great.

This is the 2.7.

Any guesses before I give my local Ford dealership a chance to screw something else up?

The plot thickens - I checked oil levels as I hadn't done so in about 2,500 miles and noticed it was low a quart. Tossed in a quart of 5w30 synthetic and now I can't get the sound... I'll try again in the morning and see if its temperature dependent.

No leaks, so Im now curious on being a tad low on oil.

It's crazy that they have to remove the engine for this. Taking off valve covers to get to the cams/rockers/etc should not require engine removal.

From start to taking off the cam phasers on a Jeep 3.6 takes like 2 hours. (One side)

Took delivery of my bronco two weeks ago, and the day I didn’t use the remote start I hopped in and started her up to that cold start rattle. I set up an appointment with dealer to look at it, next availability is in about two weeks.
