profitable to THEM. They steal things. Your area has things to steal. They commute because it's profitable.

A thief makes infinite profit
There’s no markup, margin or cost. They simply talk to their ‘connections’ at the dealership in Philly and get unlimited keys made and steal whatever they want

then they sell it

if they get $1 or 1$00,000 it’s all profit

now there is risk that the owner has some faraday cages, a dog, a gun or even a club… either actual club or a steering wheel lock.

if all of that requires some additional explanation we’re here to help

also. Most thieves live in an area they either don’t have these easily stolen things, or they don’t want to doo doo 💩 in their own backyard

if I sounded judgmental I apologize .....society needs to realize we have quite a problem when we handcuff Law Enforcement. Worked dead center West Philly for over 3 decades(PFD). I could write a book on the craziness I experienced and had to deal with, fires, shootings, stabbings etc. .....I used to thank my lucky star every time I drove down Belmont Ave. across the Schuylkill River and back home into Roxborough after my shifts. Give thugs an inch and they'll take a mile .....

Sure, but that’s not what the original post said at all 🤷‍♂️
Right but conversations aren't quite so linear. Other responses mentioned how it would be difficult to make a key with just the VIN.

um, I would hope it's completely impossible to make a key just with the VIN.

If there's ANY chance of acquiring both a new key and a VIN--and nothing more--and making the key work with the car that has that VIN, somebody has screwed up considerably.

They stopped "Stop and Frisk" and Police hands are tied.

That's quite the phenomenon, usually when laws change it's to remove freedoms... not protect them.

Good for philly.

I live in the safest part of Philly, the ne' er do wells come from the dangerous parts, even West of the City like Norristown. They stopped "Stop and Frisk" and Police hands are tied. Here's a map of crime in Philly, I'm in upper Roxborough around 11 o'clock on this map.....

Safest part of Philly sounds like a fairly low bar.

The possibility exists but you would likely need someone at a dealership to help out.

How?
Copying or programming a fob doesn't require a VIN. Therefore blocking it or even having it has nothing to do with anything

That seems like a lot of effort, reminds me of Gone in 60 Seconds...

Near me, we deal with roaming carjacker rings from Atlanta. One stole a neighbor's truck a few years ago. Everybody in our neighborhood has a ton of cameras in every direction now. We catch someone scoping out properties about once every other month. I confronted one who was trying to peep in my garage at 3am. They either target older vehicles that are easier to hotwire, or show up with a flatbed and winch. During the Helene aftermath, looting was pretty bad. There are videos of pickup trucks with 4-6 looters in the bed ready to jump out and nab generators or even vehicles. I had to sit outside, overnight by the generator with a double-stamper several nights in a row. Sad broken world.

I would think you need more than a vin!
Longtime Chevy parts manager here. We required the registered owner IN PERSON with documents that supported ownership of the vehicle before we would do anything. Title, insurance etc. In the old days it was just a key but things are different now. We were very careful about making keys or producing fobs. Had some crazy stories about why they needed keys, cheating husbands drew in spouses looking to get the husbands car back.

just watch some cop bodycame videos on Youtube, you'll see ALL SORTS of crazy stories and ALL SORTS of utterly crazy people.

They walk among us.

When I realized I could make my own third key as long as I have two working keys, I jumped on it. $60 for the key with physical blank included, and $20 for a local shop to cut the blank to match. A couple of minutes doing the dance inside the Bronco, and voila.

Because you never know when that will come in handy.
