Patent Suggest Future Ford Bronco May Get Wireless Removable Doors

I saw this and thought it was interesting for all you door removal folks. From what it says “ In this case, the removable doors already offered on the Ford Bronco would be enhanced with a coil and power supply, via a bar that runs through the center of the door. This way, one could simply push a button - either in the vehicle or perhaps even on their smartphone app - when they want to remove the doors, at which point they would electronically "untether" themselves.

From there, the user could simply lift the doors off the SUV and place them aside, rather than having to unbolt and unplug things, as is currently the case. It's an interesting idea for certain, and one that may very well make its way to production one day.”



Sounds like a cool feature, but what happens when something goes wrong and won’t work?? Will the door not be able to close or function properly?

So the bar would stay as kind of a tube door? A bar door? I dunno what they would call it.

Not sure...

I mean, kinda cool in that you would get a tube door built in. But doesn't look like you can pull that remaining tube part out, so for those people that want to be totally open, no bueno.

Looks like the only electronic that would be left in the removable part of the door would be the window - the tube door would retain the latch and lock.

I think so?? Interesting way to do it.. unless for complete door removal you have to unbolt the bar piece and unplug it. But also with the bar would still allow a quick open air experience

I'm just trying to visualize all the ways this could break when in environments Ford didn't anticipate such as near radio towers.

That looks pretty cool. I wonder how tough security would be. I guess it wouldn't be any more of a problem than people trying to steal jeep half doors.

Anyone who had any Jeep CJ will know exactly what is meant by this. The hinge separated into two parts allow the door to just be lifted off. It had to be open to do so. It was secure when closed. Of course we had hand crank windows back then. (How did we ever survive?)

Looking at the drawings it appears the "bar" would be part of the inner door panel. Hit the button and latches release the outer door portion, lift it off and walk away while the "bar" containing the electrical and latching mechanism remain, sort of a single tube door.
I would be a little worried that after I hit the switch how do they prevent the outer door portion from falling off while I get out??
It also looks like a pretty big bar, kinda defeats the doors off look and experience.... I'm sure, if it shows up in production it'll be a 2k option too.....

Put manual locks and roll up windows on it and there would be nothing to unplug…

My father in law had a system on his hot rod that were spring loaded pins that made the connection when the door was shut for power windows/locks in the early 2000's. It was a clean look and no wire running between the body and the door.

Ford still hasn’t perfected power windows yet. Why this? Power windows have been out for how long?
