New to the Bronco world. I just got a SAS Outer Banks and I’m not going to be doing any crazy stuff. However - I would just like a little added piece of mind over the plastic skid.

Any suggestions for a medium priced skid? Aluminum or steel? Or can you send me a couple of previous topic links on skid plates. I did a brief forum search - but I must be looking in the wrong place.

Thanks!

For your use case (and for a lot of us, actually), aluminum skidplates make sense. I had Asfir brand ones on an Xterra years ago and they were excellent and other people offer aluminum, too. Steel skidplates are more durable but they weigh so much more and aren't necessary for most people.

We put plastic / composite skids on out dirt bikes engine / trans cases, swing arms, rear shock linkage side frames.......these are not the plastics of old plus they are quieter.

You have nothing to worry about.

For light off-road use, the Ford skid kit is actually a pretty good value, and if you have any Ford Points from your purchase, you could apply those to get them even cheaper;

Might have to get a "Modular" Bumper too if you currently have a "Capable"

I'd actually suggest looking in the "For Sale" section here and face book, used skids work nearly as well as new ones,

☝ These are the best bet for the price and light use and if you get them from Ford, they should come with the gas tank skid, which is important and the best one available. For the money, especially if you can get them on a 20% off sale (Memorial Day...). If they don't fit your bumper (I'm not sure about that, I had them with the mod bumper), then I'd look for a used mod bumper or a compatible front skid from the aftermarket, since that's the one that doesn't fit.

Here's my front skid after a lot of use, so they may be thin compared to SFR (who I have now) but they're not useless.

x4 on the OEM set, 20-25% off on sale, with free shipping to select dealers. This is the one item, I wouldn't waste my time on Craigslist/MP, because it's a longshot that anyone is selling their gas tank skid from the OEM set, even if they are replacing other components.

I threw on the higher trim OEM metal skids to my big bend. Less than 200 shipped to my door for the engine (MB3Z-5B018-A) + transfer case (MB3Z-7E063-A) skids. Still rocking the plastic bash plate, but will eventually throw a metal one on - I have a metal gas tank skid plate from the factory since I'm a 2dr.

Is the OE set steel or alum?

Plus you know OEM is deeply tested for appropriate cooling / airflow.

Whatever skid plates that came on my Base have put up with the harshest of mall crawling and grocery getting. I’d highly recommend what ever those are. They’ve also braved the party store parking lot rodeo for White Claw runs!

My OBX have silently taken all manner of road debris from traffic comes to 4" sharp rocks and others that nicked my PPF covered flares.

I wish I could get ventilated plastic armor for the rest of underbody...

My base 2 door came with OEM steel front bash plate (part of the Mod Bumper option) and the steel gas tank skids. I added the OEM steel transfer case skid, and an aftermarket aluminum transmission skid from Mabett.

I do mostly light off roading (sand, dirt vs. rocks) and this has been an adequate setup for me. All the skids show evidence of use, so I’m glad I have them. Especially the transmission skid. Once I knew about the plastic pan, I had to protect that.

For $400 this looks to be an ARB knock off kit, you would just need a fuel skid to complete it...
