The gasoline for every station regardless of the name of the station comes from the same refineries. I guarantee if any of you had less then a gallon of fuel left and the only station for the next 200 miles was “ Lefty’s Fill her up” you would gladly pump what they sold into your tank.

I do not think the point was what would you do in an event where you did not have a choice... The question is what do you do on the regular, daily, when you do have a choice. Personally I default to the judgment of the Society of Automotive Engineers who, in the 1990s, went out of their way to lobby for and create a standard minimum for detergents and additives out of concern that the companies they worked for would be hit with considerably higher warranty claims and therefore would not have the funds to pay them as much if their clients (the consumers) purchasing their vehicles were to consistently use a fuel that did not meet those minimum standards... So I follow their advice to the best of my ability.

Sorry, meant dual injection!
Okay I found it... it seems that Ford did add port injection to the direct injection on the 2.3 in 2025... I knew they had made that change for the 2.7 in 2023.... All for the reason of cleaning valves..... (at the cost of gas milage so it had to be important) Another good reason to use a top tier fuel that has the detergents in it to assist this process.

Yeah, I’ve only had one other vehicle with a turbo and fuel injection, years ago, but my take away from that experience was running clean gas is important. The dual port injection is new in the 2025 2.3L, and it’s too early to know if it’s finicky or not, but Top Tier 91+ gas seems like a ‘why not?’ Investment.

This true, all the brands get there fuel out the same spigot. They just add their additive. Lefty may not have the name brand additive. I say maybe becasue there are some off brands that may sell name brand without the name.

We have one gas station in town that carries Top Tier gas. It is a Marathon station. Neighboring towns have Shell gas stations, and I have noticed for years that when I use Shell gas I consistently get 1-2 more MPG from those tanks of gas.

Sorry to see the bad report on Sam's Club gas. A buddy swears by Costgo gas. Thanks for posting!

According to one of the videos, all Costco octanes are top tier rated and consistently exceed top tier specifications, and because of the volume they sell, always have fresh, clean gas provided by their own suppliers which further allows them to maintain better quality control. and I believe that chevron adds techron to all octane grades. On the other hand I believe Shell has the top tier additives in their premium V- power grade. If someone knows otherwise, please speak up. Enquiring minds want to know (so do I).
I have read the same from various sources. Independent labs have tested Costco gas and it’s on par with Shell, which is generally accepted to be among the top of the Top Tier additives.

In Vermont, my Costco’s premium is 91 octane non-ethanol which, for me, is the best of the best, especially for my motorcycles. Our Valero stations also generally have 91 octane, non-ethanol, Top Tier fuel so I’ve been using that as well. If I can’t get non-ethanol, I use Shell.

Not entirely accurate. Some parts of the country DO have multiple refiners. But, given that there are very few corporate stores, the same truck dropping at Mobil could well be dropping at Kroger across the street (which is unbranded).

Im personally more partial to ethanol-free as long as the spread isn't too large. Buc'ees in Amarillo has both 86 and 91. When I'm down there, I'll top off with 91EF. My MPG is better on it than generic 91 (we dont have 93 in this part of the State).

Top tier is a trademark owned by automakers. Automakers say use "Top Tier Gas". Automakers sell the trademark to the oil companies, to put on its pumps.

While this is technically correct, it’s misleading and glosses over many of the important characteristics that define Top Tier. Automakers did work together to develop these standards and there is a trademark on the use of the term Top Tier. But there is substance to the certification and there are many independent studies that have been performed on the fuel additives over the past several decades that confirm that it is clearly and measurably better for engines to have this level of detergent additives in fuel.

You seem to be implying it’s all marketing and isn’t meaningful — that’s not true. (My apologies if that was not your intent, but that’s how I read this.) While all fuel now has to have some detergent additives to be sold in the U.S., there is a quantifiable difference in the fuels that have been certified as Top Tier. Years of research has demonstrated the benefits of those higher standards in fuel quality when it comes to engine longevity and performance.

There really should not be any debate on whether or not you use Top tier fuels. Top tier is a measurable standard which must be met, and routinely tested for a gasoline company to claim they are top tier and post that claim on their pumps. Thats probably while all the top tier providers are the larger gas companies.
Keep in mind, specifications always state minimum and/or maximum requirements. A company being able to satisfy a spec requirement is a very good thing and certainly helps with consumer confidence, but it doesn't mean that one "Top Tier" fuel vendor doesn't have superior fuel to another "Top Tier" fuel vendor. One company may merely meet mins/maxs and a different far exceed those requirements. Same goes with motor oils. So, these topics will always be filled with spirited debate and "I'm willing to die on this hill!" brand loyalty. :)

"Top Tier" tag is not earned, but purchased. Theres stations that get the same gas as the "Top Tier" gas stations, but they don't get it to label their gas as "Top Tier".

So while we are on this topic of fuels, I have a question. I have a Conoco (edit: it's actually a Cenex) station near my home (<4 mi each way or a 1/2 gallon at 16 mpgs) that IS Top Tier AND also sells ethanol free premium fuel...both pluses. Problem is, it is NOT very busy. Like rarely do I see a vehicle in there. And if I do, often they are getting the non-highway taxed diesel for their back hoe. Now the Costco is considerably further for me (maybe 8 miles each way or about 1 gallon). Costco is Top Tier, but has ethanol. If you know Costco, you also know there is ALWAYS a line to get fuel...and I REGULARLY see the tanker truck there filling the underground tanks. That tanker might be showing up every day, it's so busy, particularly with our crazy fuel prices right now.

So, which fuel do you chose, both being Top Tier? Absolutely freshy-fresh Top Tier fuel with ethanol....or maybe slightly stale Top Tier fuel without ethanol?
