I can see the hybrid option being popular with the mall crawler set, until they realize they now have the maintenance challenges of BOTH drive systems. Turning a blind eye to this is foolish.
If you go beyond cellular coverage I'd be Leary about a complex drive system like this. It's bad enough if you break a drive shaft etc but then add the myriad of things that can shut down a hybrid.... not for me.
Personally, I wish they would work out the challenges of a hydrogen powered vehicle.

Huh? Just 22% of light duty cars & trucks sold in the USA are Hybrid. So I guess you could say that, but the message is, the market is rejecting hybrids.

The reason is pretty obvious, more complexity, more things to go wrong, you rarely if ever recoup the added costs of the hybrid powertrain vs. the equivalent non-hybrid (even with all the subsidies).

Which is why the main reason folks buy Hybrids isn't about money, it's about signaling their preferences. I'd argue most people of that ilk aren't buying Broncos to begin with, but we shall see.

I already caught myself on this mistake. Q4 of 2025, all electrified powertrains (EV, hybrid, PHEV) outsold ICE.

Hybrids are the fastest growing category sales wise. For most vehicle classes, hybrids are within $750 of their ICE counterpart. And they're not that complicated. We're talking about 30 year old tech.

Is that globally? Because for the US, from what I see, electrified vehicles did reach an all time high Q4 but only at 26% (22% overall for 2025) of light-duty vehicle sales. Not even close to ICE only which was still very far ahead with 74%.

I was into this until my electric bill suddenly doubled over the last year. Now with gas going up, I'm not sure either.

Whatever. I'll see what it looks like. I like new stuff coming out, so I'm excited for it - doesn't mean any of us have to actually buy it. It's not like it's going to replace the whole line up by any means.

In terms of ICE, I don't even need an 8 though. I just ask that they put a manual tranny in a Braptor - but I know that's not going to happen.

I posted about this last September. I still have the screenshots. But observers of the site asked that they be removed.

Hopefully we see that hybrid coyote that was in that screenshot, wishful thinking but that may be what makes me trade in mine for a new one if it isn't too expensive

What year is the Prius? Hybrids have two systems to maintain. The ice repairs are basically a wash. How about the hybrid battery, electrical systems and cooling system for the battery. What is that cost of repair. Let’s use a Maverick for an example. Seems cheap when new with the incredible gas mileage. I also own a Maverick 2.0 and follow a MAV site. I wouldn’t call the hybrid unreliable. Has some issues. My real concern will be what happens in a few more years. We are on maybe year 4. Today’s manufacturers are really not trust worthy in my opinion.

The Prius has been possibly the #1 most reliable car since it's launched.

Also consider your accessories are all electric (and more yes, more reliable)

No belts to change

Your brakes last forever because they're barely used.

No starter to go bad.

Etc etc.

It’s pretty easy to look up the TCO of hybrids. They are cheaper than their counterparts. Ice costs are not a wash, they are lower when mated to a hybrid.

Globally

The demand was forced because of government influence, especially in Europe and Asia where taxes and the directive to eliminate ICE vehicles in the upcoming years. I doubt the adoption was because the public voluntarily made the choice, at least for the most part. This was true here in the U.S. as well up until the recent deregulation and the elimination of incentives. Once those incentives dried up, the sales stalled.

You can't say there was increased adoption when the public is coerced, or more accurately forced into buying EVs/Hybrids.

I'm not against EVs/Hybrids and I understand that eventually that's where we're headed. I just don't like when we are forced into a decision.
