If you get portals you don’t need a mechanic. They fix everything. So finance those instead.

APG should start a marketing campaign-“if you don’t like our broncos it’s because you’re a poor”

I think Boeing standardized that for the aerospace industry
Boeing is a whole mess unto itself.
It's actually interesting because you can pinpoint the whole thing to a shift in attitude when they merged with McConnel-Douglas & went from being an engineer run company with accountants to an accountant run company with engineers.

90% of my experience is with the GE Transportation / Wabtec locomotive aspects & man... there are some stories out there.
Just last week we (a tier 1 supplier) get an email about the Erie build shop having an urgent need for an item.
I open the drawing, which literally specs a McMaster-Carr part number, check the price online, quote it to them at a typical upcharge for such things & wait for a PO.
So basically, their sourcing is too dumb/lazy to order online, so they paid me a % to do so & took an extra day to get the item, that had to ship to me first, then them.....

I used to work somewhere where you had to use a PO or requisition form because they didn't trust people with credit cards for historical reasons. Some bad eggs ruin it for the whole crate.

Oh, I'd understand that completely if I didn't know that they have an account with McMaster.
I'd bet my years salary the sourcing dork just had a p/n come across his desk with us linked to a past purchase & never even considered opening the drawing.

We’re in the process putting the long travel bronco together, and I needed a better way of explaining the different link suspensions to wifey. French fries and straw wrappers at a local restaurant wasn’t cutting it. Found this series and this guy does a phenomenal job.

How is this relevant to the portal conversation? In the linked video, he talks about bushing deflection, and has a great example showing pinion angle change from bushing deflection. He also shows how link separation can make a difference in the angle change, based solely on the same bushing deflection. When we increased our link separation, the only real consideration was to counteract the portal leverage and control axle rotation. Didn’t even think to consider that there would be an appreciable difference in how the bushing deflection might change things. And while we do have heims at the axle end, all the anti-wobble bushings are indeed polyurethane.

The waitress seemed a little confused as to what we could possibly be having such a captivating conversation about that included the need for straws wrappers and french fries. But I had already used up my complimentary kid-meal crayons drawing dicknballs depictions so I had to improvise.

So he's talking about pinion angle, but the axle floats and the t-case is fixed... so isn't the angle is more or less constantly in motion from any suspension travel, not just bushing deflection?

Parallel 4 link seems like it would be worse for drive shaft angles since the pumpkin stays parallel to the road but still travels in an arc as the suspension travels.

I think I'm missing something key here but not sure what. Is he differentiating between pinion angle and drive shaft angle and I'm just not understanding the nuance between the two?
