So, as long as ypu have a ground tent you can live out of your car in the forests! 👍
I guess so, haha. I’m not a stupid law maker I don’t make the rules.
I think actually you have a limit of xx days per spot and you have to move on with your tent.

Yeah, in Georgia you can only stay in one camp spot for 14 days within a 30 day period, so it's a useless law since it wouldn't matter if you have a ground tent, RTT, or camper. Go figure

Personally, a RTT seems like kind of a waste. Heavy, expensive, & I don't want a tent living on the roof of my truck. It's still a daily at the end of the day.
Let's see... Someone spends $1000 - $2000 for a roof rack. Then they spend ~$3,000 so they can't use the rack for anything. Makes sense to me.

I had both hard and soft shelled RTT’s and although they have advantages, I’ve moved to a Gazelle ground tent and haven’t looked back. Two main reasons:

1) If someone moves in a RTT, the whole vehicle rocks. I wish I slept more soundly, but this can wake me.

2) once setup, the vehicle is immobilized until you pack up. Sometimes, it’s nice to dive away from the site.

What are your experiences? An RTT would be excellent if it was just me, but with another a ground tent is working better for me.

Exactly how I roll. American Adventure Labs makes gazelle specific roof rack mounts. Rounded to the contours of the bag and gives you a great spot to secure them down with a camstrap. Here's them (unloaded) on the roof of my truck.

At least you can use them up there. In Florida they just call the RTT's "boon docking" and prohibit use entirely.

Tents suck... Whether on the roof, on the ground, on a truck, on a boat, on a train or on a plane... It doesn't matter the shape, color or spread. You are in the dirt, mud, snow, sand being at one with all the bugs and crawling creatures with zero protection from larger creatures.

It's funny how marketing companies can repackage the oldest and least expensive "shelter" on planet earth to make them "appealing". No thanks.

I'll sleep in the back of the truck. Doesn't look cool or "overland" or cost anything. Guess there will be no fake "followers" gawking at my "setup"

I spot more space to attach things to your roof and totally missing the rear bumper with attachments.

Don't underestimate my ability to attach way too much shit. 🤣

There comes a point where your OEM suspension setup just says 😫 to the weight.

Anyone have a Shifpod?

IMG_5538.webp
Sure do, I have three. Absolutely love them but they are a bit bulky.

I really love the RoverX, I also have the previous generation slightly smaller Mini III, and a larger Shiftpod III+ I use for 3-7 day camp locations such as music festivals (last pic is at Alabama Hills). The big one is big though packed up, picture a 6’ tall body bag but you can stand up inside when set up and easily sleep 3-4 (I’m exactly 6’ tall)

Rover X is my new go to, great for 2 people and also a dog or small child, you most likely will not be able to fully stand up though.

All are very sturdy in the elements, and do not do the flappy wind noise, stay the perfect amount of dark inside when the sun comes up, and are well made.

I also have a Gazelle T4, it’s more spacious than the Shiftpod Rover / Mini, I can stand up, but fabric definitely not near the thickness / quality of Shiftpod (still like it, it’s my friends and family loaner tent).
