Just got back from an 800-mile road trip from my secret HQ in the Snoqualmie Valley to the Columbia River Gorge area. It was a blast. My '22 OBX ran fine, except for one problem: Every so often (and I mean often), the warning bell would chime and the CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM warning would show up on the instrument panel. I'd hit the "OK" button on the steering wheel, and the red BRAKE light would stay on for a while, then it would go away. Then, 10 minutes to a half-hour or so later, it would happen again. I couldn't detect any problem with the brakes, or any difference in brake feel.

My OBX has about 14,300 miles on the odometer, and I'll be taking her to the Pierre Ford Service Center on Lake City Way in Seattle for the 15,000 mile service soon. I've talked with Greg Karras, my service contact there and he hasn't had experience with that particular problem. I've always gotten excellent service from Greg, both with my Bronco, and going way back to around 2003 or so with my 2001 F-150. In fact, the service quality is what made me decide to stick with Ford when it was time to replace my old F-150.

This brake warning thing is a real nuisance. Actually, it's more than just a nuisance; it may actually be a hazard, as what happens if a malfunction actually does occur on my brake system? I might think it's just another false warning, and run into real trouble.

So - has anybody encountered this problem? Anybody found the cure?

I'm going to send this in a PM to that Ford guy.

Thank you

Bummer - I just tried to send a direct message to Ford Motor Company and it wouldn't go through. Maybe I'm doing something wrong. Sorry about that.

Still, if anybody knows anything about this, service bulletins, part numbers, whatever, please let me know.

Thank you

I am going through this now and my news hasnt been great. Mine went off even though the brakes work fine. They removed my entire chassis to replace some chunk of the brake system, I want to say the e-brake, and now 2 weeks later it is doing it again. They may have to remove the entire body yet again.

The system thinks there is air in the system, but the tech cant find any. I'm wondering if some canbus is damaged but at this point no one knows.

I'm going through Babbit Ford and my service advisor is named Wesley if your guy wants to compare notes. Service advisor has been great.

I've gone one round with ford on this, and it came back again last week. The first time, they replaced the plug for the brake reservoir, which fixed it for a couple months. I haven't had a chance to take it back again since it started coming on again, so not looking forward to dealing with the service dept as my warranty has run out since the last time.

Just got back from getting the brake master cylinder replaced on my '22 OBX Bronco. Here's a copy of the service sheet:

Ford Bronco Check Brake System warning light on '22 OBX with 2.7 liter engine. Screenshot 2025-11-11 105747

I had it in there for the regular 15K service, and had complained about the frequent "check brake system" warning. They diagnosed it, found faults, and ordered a new brake master cylinder reservoir. It took a few days to come in. I got a call from Greg that it had come in, and I took the Bronco in and they replaced the reservoir. The light didn't come on during the drive home. I'll be driving into Seattle twice this coming weekend, and the freeway and city traffic should be a good test to see if the problem has finally been resolved.

This forum has really helped. I found a lot of good info which I relayed to Greg in a couple emails before I took the Bronco in for the 15K service. I believe that the info I got from this forum helped in the diagnosis of the problem. Thank you guys!

Drove from my secret HQ in the Snoqualmie Valley into Seattle twice this weekend, both times taking my wife to artsy-fartsy events. She quit driving into the City at night due to the glare from oncoming traffic affecting her cataracts, so I'm her chauffeur.

Saturday evening we got caught in traffic from hell on our way to the Meany Theater because the game at nearby Husky Stadium had just let out, which caused major gridlock. After the game we had a nice dinner at the Mecca Cafe on lower Queen Anne (highly recommended). Sunday I took her to a ballet at the Seattle Center.

I consider all of this to be a worthy test of the repair job on my CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM warning. I'm now a totally happy camper. Oh yeah - there was ZERO hassle with Pierre Ford Service Center on the replacement of the master cylinder reservoir under warranty. Didn't cost me anything.

More road testing of the repair to come: I'm driving my wife to Kaiser Permanente in Tacoma to get her cataracts fixed! I hope this goes as well as my recent service experience with Pierre Ford Service Center...

On mine, at first they unplugged the connection at the brake fluid level sender and cleaned the connector. Then after that, the brake light came on and stayed on, so they looked at replacing the master cylinder, but the part number was superceeded and the replacement part was on backorder. They ended up changing the connector at the reservoir and aside from one random time since, it has stayed off.

UPDATE: It's now February 13, 2026. I've almost totally forgotten about the CHECK BRAKE SYSTEM fracus. Only time I think about it now is when I get a notification that somebody has posted on this thread. All I can say is if you live anywhere near Seattle and are looking to have your Ford serviced, you can't do any better than to go see Greg Karras at the Pierre Ford Service Center.

The wife's cataract surgery went well. She was a total bundle of nerves on the drive down and the morning drive to Kaiser Eyeball Center in Tacoma, but the op went well and I did a pretty decent job of taking care of her during recovery. She can now see everything, can even read the newspaper without readers - only problem is those multifocus lenses make her see halos around oncoming headlights. They say that'll go away. Man, I hope so.

On my 2023 2.7L we replaced the master cylinder, reservoir and sensor connector earlier this year. It was good for about 2 months and now Check Brake system is back. They want to replace the ABS module for $2,049. I'm having a hard time justifying that expense over an annoyance light - this isn't a safety issue as far as I can tell. Any recommendations?

Went through all that same stuff, but under warranty. My dealer added s ome custom code and it went away, but its giving me a new error about it not having a VIN. I have had a few other errors where I suspect the BCM to be suspect.
