I can understand why they would be concerned about scratching the ring. Watch the dismount and mounting process. These machines are made for production, not delicate trim. I'm concerned even with my steel wheels they will get scratched up. Best to remove the rings yourself.

My local discount tire wouldn't fix a flat because of the trim rings. I have since broken them all loose with a 3/8 rachet and one hand.

One time I went to Costco and they replaced a tire for me no problem with the rings. Another time they told me they couldn't get the ring off, so I took the tire home and got the ring off no problem with the right bit and long handle socket wrench. It's easier than most people make it sound, but not sure why there is such inconsistency with the shops and what they are willing to do.

There’s numerous threads about removing the rings (for painting and such) and how people said they’d never remove the rings again because some get cross threaded and such. Are the people that are removing the rings for tire replacement having this issue?

It depends on the machine and the type of dismount head. However, in general, no tire machine is designed to run on the surface-face of the wheel.

problem with the trim rings is they add some extra meat on top of the wheel. if you add the fact that the tire itself is not a low-pro tire with a flat side wall, you have a valley that is created that dismount head or bead bar needs to get into.

I don't blame the tire shops, I'm sure theyve had countless claims from customers for damaging expensive wheels.

After reading this I will for sure remove my trim rings before changing tires. The Torx is a special size and the screws are held in the Loc-Tite from what I read and are difficult to remove and can strip easily- correct?

A few of the things I have heard at Discount tire.

"Your tire is five years old, we are not allowed to touch it."
"Your (full sized trailer) tire already has two patches, The blah blah tire standards will not permit us to install a third patch. Sorry, we don't have a replacement either."
"We can't mount the tire without having the car here."
"45.00 each to mount your 12" boat trailer tires"

I have also had some good experiences, but WAY more bad than good. I'd rather get a root canal than go to Discount Tire.

1. I don't use Discount Tire for hardly anything anymore - I have had too many bad experiences with too many of them. Give me a local shop or at worst case a KanRock, though even those are spotty.

2. The major difference between these bead-lock rings and typical trim rings is that typical trim rings are held in place by spring tension, so they pop on and off easily. These bead-lock rings are threaded and take more than 5 seconds to get off, and in an industry where times are monitored and punished if they're too high regardless of reason, they're likely to either refuse or just do them without removing the rings. Couple that with not having the correct bit and yeah, there's probably a LOT of places that don't remove them.

3. I haven't tried to remove ours yet, but I am guessing it's the heads of the bolts that get stripped more easily than the threads...but if it's a fine thread, or if you aren't careful starting them into the threads in the soft-metal wheel, yeah, you could strip threads out too. Better to remove them at home prior to heading to the shop, then reinstall at home when you can take your time and do it right.

Man I've heard some doozies at DT but those take the cake. My final straw with them was when they refused to pull my tires off, put them on new rims, and put the new assemblies back on my truck. "Oh someone shouldn't have put those tires on your truck, they're not rated for your truck!" which was a 1-ton SRW truck, not the dually spec he was looking at. They were actually rated for the weight ratings...but he was checking his book.

The tip is T45. Torx NOT Torx plus. Had to get separate tip for my set as it went from T40 to T50. Used extreme care removing mine but still stripped 3. RE-tapped using M-10 x 1.5 thread size tap

Sounds like each location will be a different experience. I stood next to the guy at Discount Tire when he fixed a flat for me at about 3k miles. I was still in the "don't mess with my baby" mode. We did NOT remove the squatch beauty rings, and he did NOT make a mark on them. I also had a repair on a second tire at 14k miles, and again, at the same DT, no removal of ring, and after the repair, you wouldn't know the tire had been off the rim. Very happy with their service and attention to detail. There is another whole group of threads that discuss stripping the torx heads of the bolts, or stripping the threads in the rim because of removing the beauty rings.

All I would say, proceed with caution, ask questions, and if possible, carefully remove the ring with the proper torx bit before going to the tire shop. Good Luck.

yup. slow learner or too forgiving... I'm probably both. or just lazy bc that location was easier to get into due to traffic. But when they tried to really take advantage my 17yr old daughter and then turned rude when she got assertive, that was the last straw. (She's been welding since she was 12, riding dirt bikes since she was 6, and was in the process of refurbishing a 1940 International Super A tractor for a FFA project, so she knows a thing or 2 about a thing or 2, and probably knew better how to change tires than the sales guy) She new what tires she needed and could afford for her truck, but they saw a pretty lil blond and assumed she was an airhead there to spend Daddy's money. SOOOO Not the case.
