We updated this run, so the OR plate is a direct fit.

I would shoot a quick video of installing the new OR plate on our 4D Badlands, but we loaned it to a customer why he left his 24' Ranger Raptor with us for sliders development.

I appreciate the kind words on Metal-tech 4x4; we enjoy what we do!

Mark
That is fantastic news about the OR plate!

By the way to those reading along I think it’s important to note when I talked to Mark about the original design, he offered to swap it out. I took on myself to forge ahead.

Additionally he was super helpful & responsive, usually after hours or the weekend.

In my books, Mark and his company are top shelf. And no, he didn’t pay me or give me free product to promote him. Just honest feedback.

I do have one disappointment though — I can’t really show off the awesomeness because it’s hidden from sight! šŸ˜œšŸ˜Ž

Ok interesting. So the ground block is tied directly back to the battery NEG. I didn’t realize that’s the equivalent of a ground! I should watch more YouTube videos
This is actually how Warn recommends you ground in their instructions.

We had a good discussion on it. https://www.bronco6g.com/forum/threads/i-feel-like-some-fighting-is-in-order.103826/

Honestly the fire caused me to do quite the trip down a rabbit hole. I was naive to many things and unaware of others. Still much to learn but certainly much more educated than I was before it.

I get we are all wired to want to succeed and never fail but honestly the valleys in my life have taught me more than any mountain top. And they certainly made the view from the top much, much sweeter as I realized the magnitude of it all.

I hate your rig caught on fire but I am grateful for the knowledge & conversation that has spawned from it. You have not only learned and bettered your own situation but helped the community here as well. Thank you for sharing the story and allowing us to take the journey with you. I know I’ve had a blast with some of these conversations and hopefully made my rig a little safer along the way to boot. šŸ˜Ž

I've found this thread to be very informative. I just read the thread about grounding and have some thoughts. I probably won't post on it since the last post was back in November.

Would it make you feel better if I brought it back to life? I don’t understand forums sometimes.

I just have some comments about another post and about what happens when current flows through the ground of a piece of equipment, in this case the frame of a vehicle.

I could go ahead and post. It wouldn't be the first time I've posted on an almost dead thread. :)

Well it looks like it’s been revived!

The grounding thread is excellent! Thx for sharing. I’ve a lot to learn. But these threads are super helpful and have made automotive electrical much clearer. Also makes me want to replace the fuse on my compressor wire with a good one.

Did you also attach the winch ground block using tape?

Yip! A good double sided tape like 3M combined with autobody-grade(?) adhesion promotor is ridiculously effective. I still make certain that if it were to come off it won’t be able to make contact with something hot, hence the extensive use of liquid tape on the fuse terminals and relay.

Thought I would share a spreadsheet I threw together comparing price impact when upgrading wire size. A few things to note:

1. This is based on my specific scenario of relocating my winch solenoid under the hood.

2. If sticking with 2 AWG, I showed some credit for using the included Warn 2 AWG wires. FYI, it's about the same cost as the Warn relocation wiring kit I posted in #100 above, with the 20% off coupon. The Warn kit also includes an extended small ground lead from the controller to the winch motor that would be a (small) cost you need to add to the spreadsheet values.

3. Pricing is based on assembled cables from BatteryCableUSA. This includes ends, heat shrink and wire cut to the foot specified.

4. If you have longer runs, already own the tools (or can borrow them) or have future big wire needs using completed assemblies may not make sense for you. I considered DIY, but for me, it was about a wash cost-wise.

5. Feel free to download a copy and tweak for your specific needs.

The amp ratings for the wiring in this chart has me fully confused. Given the 409 max amp draw of a warn zeon, wouldn't this chart suggest that even 4/0AWG (0000) with its 378A rating wouldn't be large enough?

Warn uses 2AWG—are we to assume that the winch spiking to 409A is temporary enough to not require larger gauge wiring?

Not gonna lie I stole the liquid electrical tape idea from @SierraBronco and owned it like it was my discovery, lol. Well to my non-B6G buddies anyhow. so kudos go to Sierra, not me.

And Sierra can talk better about his own setup but I marked up his photo. Maybe it makes things easier. The yellow dashed lines is the TOP of the relay. The + from battery is hidden in this view as it’s using those 90* connectors. The rest is pretty straightforward.

Can’t forget his high dollar stripper….errr, fuse. 😜

Hmm, the red wires labeled "+AUX" look like arb wiring with the 40A fuses...and there are two wires visible. Is this really the switch wire to an Aux switch to trip the Stinger relay?

Only one of the small wires for the relay goes to the aux switch. The other one goes to ground.

As to the wiring question above, the 400/500 amp draw will be peak usage-so if you’re really working it and it can spike on initial startup. Most winches aren’t going to be running constantly for long periods of time at their max. Couple that with most also being located at the front for a short run of wire, and one could see why these winch companies justify a 2G wire. They probably have justifications for why they don’t run fuses either.

I did some testing on the rear winch to see what kind of temps the wire hit with 1/0 and *trying* to work it pulling an F150 up a gradual incline, then winching it down, then repeating the process twice gently applying the brakes. Only hit about 80 degrees with 60F ambient. (If I remember correctly. Might be off on those numbers) Would be interesting to repeat the test with 2G but I’m not that motivated.

How come the switch wire is fused? Extra protection to the factory fuses on Aux switches?

Switch wire like auxiliary switch? It’s not. If you’re referring to the huge fuse for the winches, the relay is used on that circuit just to make certain all those big wires aren’t powered until I want them to be.
