I originally used the OBD II hard wired cable but found that our street is so busy with vehicles it kept powering up and after 1 day killed the battery. I used the dongar adapter now.
That doesn't seem right to me. Why would they create a powering method (hardwire) and have that safety feature ( sentry which many want) that would/could drain a battery in a day like that?

Guessing lots of passing cars are triggering the cameras often and making them active?

Either the traffic or it could be windy days that shake the bronco. I left the wiring installed maybe I will test it again.

How did you mount the camera outside? What did you use to secure it ? I have my camera inside behind the molle, it does not bother me, but honestly I did not consider mounting it to the back-up camera stalk. I have a turn off-road mount, there are some place to put it if I extend it.
I have limo tinted windows so installing the camera inside on top of the rear window was too dark. I wasn’t a fan of putting it on top of the brake light due to the tire being in the way if I pull the view downward on the monitor. So I came up with this option. I used a black hose clamp with a black rubber liner from a rubber insulated clamp. They are the same size. The camera is clamped to the Bronco rear camera housing. The only thing is I would have to remove the camera to take off the spare. Quite easy though since it is just a hose clamp and the camera plug is behind rear brake light.

No I get it, it just seems like a flawed application then if we have to worry about that everytime our vehicle is parked on a busy road for a few hours.

High end dash cams with parking recording modes have external extra batteries you can buy to keep it running 24/7. BlackVue has extra batteries that will record while parked and recharge when the vehicle is running. But like mentioned, too much activity around the vehicle is causing it to constantly record and kill the battery.

Thank you for the clarity, this is my first foray into a dashcam. So then I just have to determine if there will be too much activity around my vehicle during my workday downtown. And/or just use the dongle method and forgo sentry mode.

You’ve probably already done this but in the menu there are three sensitivity levels. Does it do this on all three levels?

Yes it did it at the all the levels. I am going to test again since this is a newer model. I think once it's warmer I will move the camera from the spare tire to inside and change the power and see what happens. I love the clarity of the outside mount but when it rains it's useless.

The sentry feature just requires power all the time, correct? There's nothing special about that wiring harness other than it runs to the fuse box and is powered 100% of the time. Those USB's on the dash are powered all the time so it should work for the sentry feature too I'm guessing.
Hard wiring for sentry taps in to both 12v constant AND switched, to know when the car is on.
Running usb only, would just power the camera 24/7 like it were actively being driven and probably kill your battery. Hardwired with both switched and constant should be able to tell when the battery drops below a certain voltage and turn the camera off completely. Thought I had a blackvue wired this way, and it still killed my battery on a different car.

I know others have used the Dongar power adapter so it must work but with the OEM rearview mirror removed, the other end doesn't get plugged into anything. Assuming this doesn't cause any issues/codes?

Also...it appears there's a light sensor on the back of the OEM mirror. I'm hoping that is not being used by the headlights in any way, shape or form? For auto dimming mirror hopefully?

I use the Dongar and there are zero issues.

Hmmm I have not noticed any changes. I took my OEM mirror off, it's in a box on the shelf now. Even if you kept it, the Wolfbox would cover this sensor?

I'll take a photo tomorrow. It's on the back side of the mirror (facing forward) so the Wolfbox mirrror would not cover it up.

I'm about 3/4 of the way done with the installation and I purchased the mount adapter so I could eliminate the OEM mirror altogether. They left out the damn screws. No idea what size they are either. Frustrating.

Hey all - really appreciate all the info in this thread! Couple of questions if anyone knows please:

1) Is it there a way to have the mirror power each time automatically with the screen fully off? I have the screen saver on so the feed shuts off but it’s still back lit. Not the end of the world but at night I still have to turn it off manually. #FirstWorldProblems

2) I got an extension for the USB C that is much lower profile. Any ideas if there is something similar for the gps antenna and/or rear camera?

Thanks!

Adam
