I am in the middle of my first oil change (first time I have bought a new Ford and the first oil change wasn't included, but oh well) and have a few observations where if anyone else has done this already knows what happens. First thing is the drain plug.....that thing is AWESOME!!!!, the rate that it can get the oil out of the pan is very impressive, really like that. then there is the cartridge filter, the filter itself is not a big deal but the upper housing keeps dripping oil forever and the o-rings are just a messy Pain in the ASS. Why did they feel the need to take a good thing like spin on filter and totally fuck it up. I may be looking for a spin on filter adapter for future oil changes.....and it's not like the cartridge is a ton cheaper than a spin on.....morons. It is still dripping in the garage so I'll finish it up tomorrow night or the day after, whenever I get some time to look at it again.

Why not take a rag and simply wipe out the inside of the canister housing? Would take.. IDK.. less time than posting this haha I always crack mine loose so it drains better while the oil drains out of the plug then come back after half an hour or so of doing other things and its got very little dripping oil in it left..

That said canister filters aren't new.. Chrysler's 3.6 pentastar uses them in millions of vehicles for a long time among anothers.

I don't necessarily disagree with not liking the filter vs a traditional spin-on but not for any of the reasons you mentioned. I just don't like that there's no anti-drainback valve resulting in dry(ish) starts every 17 minutes the engine is off. Its a much cleaner filter change though as its not a ridiculous sideways mounted terrible mess (except for those with a 2.3L.. they still use spin ons and need small hands from the wheel well to access them).

I had to modify my oil drain pan to take on oil faster courtesy of the high flow out of the Bronco drain so I'm with you on that one..

^^ and install a billet UPR drain valve on the pan on the initial oil change.. no more fighting a river of oil when the stock yellow plug is removed.

I dont care to get every drop out bc it doesn't matter, so the canister comes off whipped out, o rings replaced and back in. simple

To each their own, but I personally like the cartridge better. On top of the engine so its easier to get to...yes please. Not a horizontally mounted filter which will for sure result in oil spillage on a traditional spin on filter...check.
Just get used to setting the upper housing on a shop rag and wipe it down.

Guessing that you don't have a 2.3L

the cartridge is a lot more of a mess than the spin on, the spin on is simple, self contained, spin the old one off, a little oil on the gasket, add some oil to the filter and spin it on and done. How do you wipe out the cap with the spike thing sticking out of the middle of it, unless you are a small chinese woman I don't see a good way of getting in there to wipe it out.....I blasted it out with Brake Clean but that is a pain also. replacing the o-rings every time what a waste when I could have a filter that just spins on and done. top or bottom doesn't really matter, the drain plug is on the bottom and I am already there so nothing saved there unless you are using a vac and taking it out the top. So people on here actually struggle with the spin on filters....ok.

I really like the new design, there's no way to take off a spin on without oil running everywhere. I don't spill a drop with the cartridge. I also added a billet plug as the oil came out so fast that it would almost overflow the drain in the pan.

I don't see how you could possibly have a problem sticking a rag-wrapped finger in the cap or even a screwdriver if you wanna get forensic. I think you're overthinking it.. it doesn't have to be spotless.

And the new o-rings come with any new filter.. 30 more seconds of work in exchange for zero mess once every 5-7k miles.

The cartridge is not any cheaper TO YOU, it's much cheaper and profitable for Ford.
I hate the drain plug if you are changing your oil at home, 6 quarts of oil drained in a few seconds splashes everywhere. I use an extractor and just remove the last few ounces through the drain plug. It takes longer but It's more controlled and cleaner.

I've never had a mess with the spin on, I just put the pan under it to catch the oil.....I've done thousands of oil changes on nearly every make and model without an issue with them, this cartridge is just slower and makes more of a mess which is something I don't like. no way to drop stuff with old oil on it into my pan when it is on the top either.

Just changed mine to on the 2.7 If you dont just yank out the plug, you can control the flow. Its easy, just make sure the oil is cooled down a little. The cannister was much cleaner than any spin on I have ever changed. Loosen it up a little and let it drain for a short time. NO MESS at all. Did you take the fill cap off first? Maybe you need to work on your technique.
