Just changed mine to on the 2.7 If you dont just yank out the plug, you can control the flow. Its easy, just make sure the oil is cooled down a little. The cannister was much cleaner than any spin on I have ever changed. Loosen it up a little and let it drain for a short time. NO MESS at all. Did you take the fill cap off first? Maybe you need to work on your technique.
I love the plug and getting oil out fast, that is the only good change. The filter is junk, I left the plug out and the rest of the oil dripping, then screwed the filter housing off and let it drain for maybe 30 minutes before I lifted it out, oil was still up in the cap and gets all over, spin offs are a much cleaner and faster process.

I've never had a mess with the spin on, I just put the pan under it to catch the oil.....
I think this is the confusing part to me. So you do get spillage with the spin on filter but use a catch pan to catch it...but having a rag to catch residual oil in the cartridge cap is a nuisance? The spillage from a spin on filter is a bigger nuisance to me, as in a number of engines the spillage occurs on other vehicle parts before it even makes it to a drain pan (looking at you, F150 coyote).
I honestly don't even think that a rag is needed as long as you turn the cartridge cap over once you remove it so it is not sitting in a position to just drain.

Thats odd, I loosened the filter a little, when I pulled it off it had all drained back into the engine.

I just changed the oil a few minutes ago and this is how much is left in the pan using the extractor. Do I need to remove the steel skid plate to get this, no, but I'll continue to do it just to inspect.

Other than the initial rush that tends to try and overwhelm my drain pan's ability to store it I actually like the high flow as I feel like it does a good job of flushing out anyting that's settled to the low point.

Looks like it's about a wash in regards to the filter:

1 guy, complaining 8 times about it... and
8 guys thinking the filter is great.
B6G is endlessly entertaining like that.

Quick - what say you all? Should a soft-boiled egg be broken at the large end or the small? Discuss!

I think that really depends on the type of egg. Chicken, quail, lizard, ostrich, etc...

Also, love that someone named @the poacher is the first to give an egg related opinion.

Extractor? You talking about pulling it from the dipstick tube?

I understand your point, I saw an old video of extractors vs. drain from a Mercedes technician and he debunked that myth. I also change the oil every 3k miles so I don't expect any debris, I know it's too early but I only spend around $40 using Pennzoil Platinum.
On my boat, I also use the extractor on the outboard but drain a little from the bottom before winterizing it to remove any water condensation that accumulates at the bottom of the crank.

To each his own. Looks like it is just as involved and pulling the drain plug. For me, I like to hope anything settled in the pan is flushed out. I do like your Bronco!

I don't necessarily disagree with not liking the filter vs a traditional spin-on but not for any of the reasons you mentioned. I just don't like that there's no anti-drainback valve resulting in dry(ish) starts every 17 minutes the engine is off. Its a much cleaner filter change though as its not a ridiculous sideways mounted terrible mess (except for those with a 2.3L.. they still use spin ons and need small hands from the wheel well to access them).
I think the anti-drainback is built into the filter housing. I know when I break the seal on my cartridge I can hear the oil drain out of the filter housing with an empty oil pan.

I wish.. but i don't think it's the same / enough per some investigation/documentation I've seen
