You are absolutely right.... That is why there is the long arm suspension (ie. the BRaptor)... It is for articulation. Portals do not improve articulation. It is all about what type of off road wheeling do you do.

and actually the 1.22 regear... you have to go to a 42 inch tire to get back to the stock gearing.... anything smaller gets you a lower gear ratio (if you are starting with the SAS 35).

True. With portals running 38s you could regear to 4.1; giving you ratio around 5.

I wonder if I could put the portals with my 35s for now, and add the Dana 60 and bigger tires later when the tread wears more. Eh, who am I kidding, I don't have $20k right now, and there's already a line.

Stay with 35s and your running the 4600 set-up. Minus security cage and upgraded suspension.

Problem with a Dana 60 is your going to have to have new axles made. Current setup is for stock splines.

You have a problem with the BRaptor.... it is already 8 inches wider than a Bronco because it essentially has a long arm suspension on it. That is why it requires the amber grill lights. It is the law. There is no way around it, the portals add 7 inches of width. Now the question is why would you want to??? I understand that there is a group that has lots of money and no sense and would spend money.... but if you wanted to build something to run trails like the rubicon, you sure would not start with the BRaptor. The BRaptor is way better at running the desert at high speed. You do not want the portals for that. It has more than enough clearance, you want to maximize articulation and keep your COG as low as possible. It is the slower trail running and rock crawling that needs the clearance and the regear.

Quinn is a little different. He does not want to sell something just because someone will buy it. He wants to make the best possible vehicle available. Portals on a BRaptor is ridiculous. It is a waste and actually degrades what it is good at.

I was looking at it from mostly a financial aspect. I suspect a stock Braptor will outcrawl Bronco with portals.

As for a Braptor not a good crawler, the width is an issue but otherwise it appears to do just fine.

By the time you put portals on a Bronco you’re nearly at Braptor width, correct?

if i understand from the other thread properly, the issue with the huntingdon rims is due to clearance between the bead locks on the inside of the wheel and the caliper with the current solution being a wheel spacer.

other wheels don't have this interference issue.

Right. That those rims have large bolts that block some of the backspacing and get in the way of the caliper. Hence, Bored has to use a space so the rims don't go on all the way. (That's how I envision the issue, not having seen it.)

I think the issue is gearing and clearance. While the Braptor has better power and articulation (two things that are hard to best in a fullsize), a stock Badlands (for instance) fitted with portals will have more clearance and lower gearing. Hence, a Braptor excels at desert racing while a Badlands with portals excels on rocks.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think a total clearance of 15" or more bests a Braptor. And effective gearing of 5.7 (4.7 x 1.22) is better than the Braptor.

Okay.... A stock BRaptor vs a stock Bronco... I agree... It probably would out crawl a stock Bronco given the same driver. It has more torque, a little more clearance, and better articulation.

The bronco has 11.6 inches of clearance and 415 ft lbs torque. The Brapter (running 37s) has 13.1 inches of clearance and 440 ft lbs torque. That will make a difference. That is 1.5 inches of extra clearance which may not sound like much but is actually pretty big. It definitely makes a difference on the trail. People spend big bucks to get that 1.5 inches.....

I calculate my Bronco will have about 18 inches of clearance. Just my guess, but I am betting that it makes a difference. Yes I will only have the 415 ft lbs of torque but I will also have lower than stock gearing so by the time it gets to the ground.... I kind of feel I am in a better situation there as well.

My opinion (remains to be seen) I do not think it is even going to be close.

Now I am not going to go out and compete with the BRaptor in high speed running or in the whoops... It will own me.

My final width will be about (ever so slightly less) than the BRator. So... even stevens there.

AND I am able to do all this with a 2 Door... and as everybody knows, the 2 door, well....

I don't see how they can call the UD60 what it is, being a semi-float. If I was going to run a 60 & I won't. I would have a rock jock 60 built & get a set of rims. I wouldn't worry about carrying a spare because at that point it would be a trailer queen If I started running trails I needed all that on.

Nope, hard pass on portals for me, too cost prohibitive & I doubt it would fit it into the garage.
Besides, my set up works really good for the trails I'm running. I may slide a bit here & there but I still have my $20+K

I would entertain an Atlas though Just need more details on what the side effects (Dash lights etc..) which Fun Haver doesn't ever seem to want to share.

Atlas = Transfer case... lower range. I think most all of them offer a two speed but can come in up to 4 speed. Very strong; high end equipment.

It would eliminate the 4A if you had that.... I find it handy on the road. I do not want to give it up.

Got to admit that lower end gearing would be nice......

Yep, just need the details on what issues were encountered. It would also allow the upgrade to standard u-joint drive shafts at the same time .

that's the easy part, and the new UD60 has bigger bearing and likely a different axle retaining flange pattern as well.
