Wonder if it has to do with sound? Maybe it going straight from air box causes more noise at some RPM and the turn before the other turbo muffles it. 🤷‍♂️

That's actually a fairly good possibility. Ford has a history of making some goofy looking intakes trying to get the sound dialed in.

That's actually a fairly good possibility. Ford has a history of making some goofy looking intakes trying to get the sound dialed in.
I would bet that an aftermarket intake would wake up the turbo sound a good bit.

Haha that's procurement, vendor audits and csuite accountability.....it's almost seems engineered to deliver tax and loss benefits with cash rebates from vendors etc and getting folks into dealer to upsell them.

Regardless the third party oversight is certainly diligent.

That's mostly quality ($) not actual design. I don't think there have been any/many that are actually design changes...though there are a lot to remember.

In twin-turbo engines (like the 2.7L or 3.5L EcoBoost), the turbos sit on opposite sides of the engine.


  • The driver-side turbo has a relatively straight path to the intercooler or throttle body.
  • The passenger-side turbo usually sits farther from that common junction point.

To make sure both turbos deliver air evenly, engineers design the passenger-side tube with a twist, curve, or longer path to balance:


  • Airflow volume
  • Pressure drop
  • Timing of the airflow pulse

That twist helps ensure both turbos feed the engine evenly and that one side doesn’t create a lean or rich imbalance.

Ford states, normal by design̈. Same across all models with the turbos. 1 day and 300 miles to find this out. 1200 miles on a new 2.7.
