Trail Turn Assist, What Am I Doing Wrong?

at the 2022 bronco super celebration east ford had professional drivers drive you up mountain roads for demo drives they did real fast donuts on gravel turn a rounds, they called that switch the donut button and they will do donuts within their wheel base as long as you can hang on to it.

Interestingly, this was the only hero switch that they didn’t/wouldn’t go over at off-roadeo Tennessee.

We used it at the Nevada Off Roadeo, it is pretty loud and grunts, but that’s all normal. If your at trail speed and loose surface it’s pretty bad ass.

Just watched a video of it. Very cool. Reminds me of the pivot steers we used to do with the M113 APC (neutral steers on a tank are even more awesome. The best, even).

Sounds like you engaged it when your steering was already at the lock position?? If so this is not the best way to do it. Turn it on BEFORE your steering is locked left or right. In fact you can keep it on and it will automatically engage when you hit the lock position either direction.

Trail Turn Assist is useful in the tight trails we have in FL. The noise you are hearing sounds like it is normal as others have said. Definitely only use it on loose terrain. I find depending on the situation 4 low, with the front locker engaged and using trail turn assist works great. In my situation, the suspension is articulated, and engaging trail turn assist unlocks the rear. So, I needed to lock the front to keep pulling me forward. Worked like a charm.

I use this function nearly every time I'm off road (every day).
Absolutely fantastic on tight trails built for side by sides, with TIGHT switch-backs and steep turns. It works EXCELLENT!!! It works best in muddy or slick conditions. Saves time, eliminating a 9-point turn and making it a 3-point turn instead. It has literally saved my Bronco, and likely my life on more than one occasion. I highly recommend folks familiarize themselves with this feature, in the event you may actually NEED it someday.

Additionally, I've taken trails that were way-to-tight with corners were way-to-sharp for even the 2dr, just because the TTA added the extra confidence (and capability).

So this feature actually opens up the number of trails I feel confident the Bronco can handle.

They didn't use it when I went to Off-Roadeo New Hampshire either.

I suppose we were lucky because it was raining non-stop on our day there and we were able to use it a couple of times.

They did explain how it works, but said the ground wasn't soft enough in the demo area to safety do it, which probably goes back to what @GI_Jo_Nathan said about not using it on unsuitable terrain.

They did use it when I was at Off-Rodeo New Hampshire in July - it had rained over the previous weekend, so they were able to give an effective demonstration. The guides did caution to use it sparingly due to the damage it can cause to the trail. They said they didn’t demo it unless it was wet for that reason.

I need a little help here as I may be engaging the trail turn assist at the wrong time.

Twice, while traveling up a trail and encountering locked gates, I have attempted to engage trail turn assist. Both times I heard loud mechanical noises coming from the driver’s side engine compartment and immediately turned trail turn assist off. Fortunately, the Bronco can maneuver in small spaces and was able to "K" turn out and no back a mile or so down a hill.

Both times I was in 4-hi and the steering wheel was cranked to the extreme, once left, once right when I engaged it.

Any thoughts?

They didn’t go over it in Moab either.

We did it when we were in Moab. There was a sort of sand pit along the trail. We were given the option to try it, so… I gave it try. It works really well in sand, I’m guessing it will do well in snow or mud also.
