I was thinking something similar - maybe it’s a red herring to blame the customer.

Is there an incentive for the dealer to find the customer at fault in a case like this? E.g. is it common to charge the customer more for a repair than the dealer would get paid by Ford if the repair was covered under warranty?
Warranty always pays less. I wouldn’t consider that an incentive to screw a customer out of their warranty, but some dealerships are really sleazy though.

Could just be a misunderstanding too. Maybe I don’t have all the details.

Boy if they pulled all that back replacing a BCM…

*edit* I say that but there is an antenna back there they would have checked so… I guess they get a pass
hey @Ducati1098 - do you happen to know where the original ground is for the B&O amp and Sub from the factory? Just wondering if it’s in this same location or is it on the passenger side?

UPDATE - so here's the story from the dealer. The Ford dealer said that they went back and forth with a Ford Technician and they are saying it was the aftermarket audio. They said the "vehicle has a piggyback connector directly connected to the ACM then goes to the aftermarket system. While referring to wiring cell 13 it can be seen that the ACM gets power from the BCM, with the piggy back system present it is possible that if there is an issue with the aftermarket system it would affect the BCM." So they said it will not be covered under warranty. The "piggy back" thing they mention I assume is the PAC Module that the audio installers installed. The audio installers are saying they'll reimburse me.

The system I have is the PAC Module > DSP to speakers > amp for Sub > Sub. I had all of this since November and everything worked fine.

Then in Feb the subwoofer blew, so I went back and they replaced under warranty and at this time I had them install 2-new Focal speakers in the kick panel and then the tweeter on the dash. After this is when the issue happened and the above is what the dealership said Ford told them, which I have the print out of their documented conversations.

The below are pics that the dealership sent to me and Ford; showing the after market audio connections.

I picked up the Bronco and the installers said they'd reimburse me. However, the dealership obviously did not reconnect the audio, and the installer said they would. My question now is should I allow them to reconnect everything? Could the double grounds have caused this? Or the PAC Module? If so, where should the installer ground things? I'm just nervous having everything reconnected and it happening again as it's a HUGE PIA! This is a professional audio installer company who said they do Broncos all the time and this is the first issue they know of, but obviously Ford is always gonna blame aftermarket to keep them from having to cover it. I just don't see how this could've happened.

What would you do?

What caused the sub to blow? The speaker or the amp?

Maybe that spot is just a bad ground from the factory or something? Still don’t see how it could affect the BCM

Just trying to see if there isn’t some correlation between your failures here

I believe it was me with it up to loud. Obviously not 100% sure but the amp is 500watts so pretty powerful and I had the top off so music was loud and I’m guessing sub wasn’t broken in? But I was told the voice coil burnt on it. however it was in for 3-mos and no issues or changes until one day it just blew. Then I had front speakers installed and sub replaced and then this No Key Detected issue. The BCM is close to the front speakers so I just wonder if something happened with that hook up…..

im just super nervous to allow them to rehook it back up and then this happen again

If you blew the speaker then yeah, not an electrical issue, not related to the BCM I don't believe.

If it were me, I would have the audio shop tap a new ground, could be right next to the one they used. That way Ford can't come back and say "its your double ground issue" ~if~ it comes back. It won't fix or change anything, it just removes the excuse your dealer is using, and maybe gives you a bit of piece of mind. They could scrape the paint back and put a self-tapping sheet metal screw 2" away from that existing ground lug for all that it matters really (for the record, not really recommending that, it would look horrible - it would work, but if it were me, I would ~know~ that is back there looking bad, even though it's hidden by a trim panel: drilling a small hole and use a bolt would look nice though, or scrape the paint back on the hole that's to the rear/left in your photo - just above where the knuckles are).

Going through the wiring diagram, the ACM gets power from Fuse 32, which is on the BCM (the fuse panel under the steering column). But if that fuse didn't blow, the audio didn't break your BCM. So I would say if the dealer wants to continue to push the "Your audio broke the BCM" they need to show why Fuse 32 didn't blow to protect the BCM. That is just about the ~only~ place the ACM and BCM interface.

THANKS Brian very helpful and great point about the fuse!!! I do recall seeing that the fuse was not blown, so it’s a great question of why not. If it caused the issue then fuse I would think would’ve blown.

I was wondering if the installer might’ve clipped a wire when installing front speakers that went to BCM as all those wires are right there under the steering wheel. I doubt it but who knows.

but it is very odd that nothing in the vehicle changed at all from when installer put in front speakers and swapped the sub out that this happened. Could’ve been a freak coincidence on timing I guess. These cars and all their electronics and chips drive me insane!!

Where are the modules located so I can check to see if any are disconnected?

Possibly an issue with the BCM

IMG_6867.webp
That explains why I can't start my Bronco by coasting down a hill and popping the clutch with the ignition on.
