mObridge help w/front door speakers sounding "muddy"

Morning from Guam!

(I am new to the speaker game so please forgive me if I am asking noob questions) I replaced all speakers as follows to include the mObridge Amp:

Dash speakers: 3x JL Audio C1-400x
Front Doors: 2x Kicker 46CSC674
Rear: 2x C1-650x
Sub: 1x JL Audio 12W3-D4

The front sound feels "muddy", I believe it's the two door Kickers causing this as they are putting out bass. When I move the sound completely to the rear the sound is crystal clear from just my rear C1s and sub, when I move all the way to the front it gets muddy again.

Question to the audiophiles out there:
1- Is it normal to have your door speakers pushing lower bass when you have a great 12 inch sub in the back? My understanding was your not supposed to do this and let the sub do all the sub work?
2- As this is my first DSP, how would I remove the lower frequencys from only the door speakers in the mObridge software? Or are there certain ranges you would recommend based on my door speakers?
3- Did I go wrong with the Kicker 46CS's when compared to my other speakers? (I wanted JL all around but it said online my doors couldn't fit JLs but I saw on the forum others have succeeded?

My goal is to have clear audio and I know I'm close just can't figure out what is messing me up! Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.

I would first reach out to Fraser @mObridge and see if he can tweak the tune file. His customer service is the best in the business.

At Fraser’s suggestion, I went with dedicated mid base speakers (Hertz MP Pro) in my kick panels. There’s really no reason to use 2-way speakers in your kick panels as your primary sound stage comes from your dash. The rear speakers are really just fill, and I went with bigger 6.5 inch instead of the 4 inch stock size as well.

You may have one or both front kick panels about of phase with sub. If they are reproducing any frequencies that sub is, except out of phase it will affect those frequencies. Could also be reproducing too much of a very narrow frequency band if they are all in phase. Verify all your positives and negatives. There are many reasons. The Bronco really benefits from a DSP.

yes I had Fraser pre load a tune for me before shipping and worked with him over the phone once. Helped a ton but we didn’t touch the door panels and I think that’s what is messing me up. I’m so close to purchasing the C2s for my door panel, how did you get the tweeter installed in the dash cleanly? Thats the only thing I’m worried about as we don’t have the best audio shops here in Guam, can I purchase some kind of mounting bracket to make it fit easier? Thanks!

Half-a-day! You have front door speakers?

In all seriousness, nothing sounds muddy at all once I tuned my system. You use the DSP to cut out the extreme lows that your "door speakers" can't reasonably reproduce.

The answer for me on the kick panel speakers was to set it up with bandpass filter allowing from 125 Hz to 10 kHz, if I allowed it to go above 10 kHz, it would sound muddy.

So the answer on how to do it is in the MoBridge software (near the top) click on Channel EQ, and there you can do filtering. It will do high pass, low pass, and band pass filtering as needed.

Finally, don't necessarily believe what fits based on Crutchfield or other websites. That's only what fits with 0 modifications. The amount of work to install my Morel Maximo Ultra Coax speakers was trivial, but still not just dropping in unmodified.

Personally, I am using all Morel Maximo Ultra Coax 402's and 602's in my setup with a Kicker 48TRTP122 subwoofer. It sounds amazing.

LOL, you definitely need to do your own work in Guam for most things.

I JUST CUT A TINY NOTCH WITH AVIATION SNIPS TO GET THEM TO FIT THE DASH!

I spoke w/Crutchfield and they said they “fit with modifications” in the kick panel…just some sanding apparently. Were the MP Pros difficult to install in the kicks? Don’t see many folks running those…

Muddiness lies between 300-700 hz typically, i would try dropping those frequencies down on the master eq as a starting point.
1. 6 inch speakers in a 2 way setup like the bronco should run from 80hz-300hz, this is your mid bass. Below 80hz is sub frequencies
2. Leave the crossover points alone, this wont solve your issue you just need to either drop those frequencies on the master or drop the gain a few DB on each kick panel speaker in the channel EQ tab.

I have installed these with a set of ford speaker adaptors with zero other modification

As far as the kick panels go, would jumping to the JL C2s be a significant upgrade? I’m hoping for a little more clarity and like the idea of keeping JL all around. Or are the Hertz just too good and I should grab that instead? Trying to decide for the upcoming Black Friday specials lol, thanks!!

Update:

I gave up trying to tune myself as I could tell I wasn’t getting close to the potential in the system. Took it to a local shop and they did an amazing job for only $80! System sounds KILLER!! It’s actually too powerful I may need to take it back to them and ask to lower it a little lol.

ok so my next question is about my front kick panel speakers, the Kicker 46CSC674.

if I were to upgrade these to the JL C2-650, would that be considered a significant upgrade in sound?
