Just curious if anyone has had any problems with lower midbass from the 6.5’s in the stock location and solutions? I get tons of output but extension in the 80hz area is poor. I’m guessing speaker location may be driving this?

Speaker location and that it's mostly open behind the speaker really doesn't help. Sadly, there really isn't much substitute for a good sub pushing a lot of air around

This.

However, I know people have been happy with some replacements and an amplifier. If I ever have the time--read never--I'm going to try and get some replacements in a sealed box in that location. The three pedals feel cramped already, though.

Agree with all of the above.

Just no way to seal it up well enough to get much bass out of the kick panels, unless you do some sort of custom enclosure in there.

I've seen some people actually fit 6.5" woofers in there -- cut holes in the trim panel and just mount them there. I have to wonder how it sounds, since it isn't a great enclosure. I'm sure the speaker can move - but without a good enclosure, even though the cone is moving I don't think it's moving much air (which is what it needs to do to make sound). It's like trying to push your desk while sitting in your rolling office chair... you can eat your Wheaties and push all you want, but not really gonna move much desk around.

I replaced mine with some Focal ACX165 from Crutchfield and it made a nice improvement, I replaced the rest of the speakers with pretty descent Alpines and no amps and the sound and base is night and day.
sure amps may take it to another level, but i am impressed how much better it is already.

You could try those foam speaker baffles. I’m going to install on one kick this weekend and see what it does as compared to the other side without the baffle.

Do you have an amp and DSP? If not, it'll be tough to get more out of the kicks, they need more power and you'll have EQ/timing issues without a DSP. I've had a small JBL amp/dsp for a while, Focal ACX165s (with/without the foam baffles), different acoustic treatments, there was an improvement but not great. Next I tried Hertz Cento C165L 6.5"s, much much better. You don't want coax in the kicks.

I'm in process of installing AudioFrog GB60s and pushing 200W RMS to each, all new amps/DSP/speakers/acoustic treatment/wiring, if this doesn't work than nothing will up front. Just finished my custom speaker mounts for the kicks, tweeters next, I have a long way to go on the rest of the system before I can power it up.

Edit: BTW, I assumed you have a sub.

Yeah I have a DSP and a sub. I was wondering if anyone had sealed off the opening for better midbass. I’m using sound deadening but didn’t block off the opening.

I’m talking about the opening in the kick panels where the speaker wire comes through.

I went through this effort I cut plastic pieces to close the large hole and glued it in place. Then I 3D printed some adapter rings for dayton audio 6.5’s. Ran them to a kicker key mounted above the glove box. I used spray foam to seal up inside where the clips protrude into the cavity. I ran the speaker wire in from above where there is a foam seal and sprayed some expanding foam to seal that as well.

I measured this setup with REW and it gets down to about 55hz fairly decently. I ran that for over a year before I threw in a sub.

Thanks! I may try to seal up the bottom hole with some sound deadener and see where I get. I have a sub, but the mid isn’t extending to 80hz with a 24db crossover.

Most car speakers in that size are designed around being placed in a door with much more volume. Air leaks exposed to front of speaker are not helping. A good sub and properly tuned DSP along with good kick panel speakers will give good results. And sealing off the holes near front of speaker.

I used sound deadening also. Also used some to make sure to seal between the speaker and the mounting ring as well as using foam between the face of the speaker and the plastic kick panel to direct as much air into the cabin as I could.

I sealed up the hole at the bottom of the kick panel and it made a significant difference. I got about 3db more output on the lower end. The change added some impact I felt I was missing.
