Couldn’t be the upper FDU mount that is known for cracking?

It’s on the wrong side and I’ve never gotten this noise from one of those on the passenger side. But never say never and worth the check. However since he doesn’t off-road, I highly doubt it. Those seem to only break under heavy off-roading.

I just got under mine and started really poking around. It appears that there is some play on this piece of the passenger front axle, where it attaches to frame

Anyone know if there should be play here, or if I need to tighten this bolt down?

It also appears my front differential is leaking from the fill plug… I just had both serviced and both appear to be leaking. How lovely

I checked mine is pretty tight and is not loose , some movement but the noise isn’t coming from here when I push up and down on bumper.

Yeah that lower mount for the axle tube extension is on rubber bushings if I recall and it's ok to float a bit.

Yeah, it’s rubber for sure. Has a bit of play. Bolt wasn’t loose, but i tightened it a bit more - noise and play still there

Starting to worry it’s inside the axle or the CV

If I grab and hold the axle shaft housing then hit the cv axle, I hear the noise. If I hold the cv axle and hit the axle shaft housing, they noise isn’t there

4x4 works fine, been doing this for at least 40k miles now

Any ideas or thoughts on what I should do?

Replace CV. Probably a worn out cage

I don't think i would worry to much, at least with respect to the FDU. There isn’t a lot in that axle tube - the axle extension just has a couple of roller bearings and a cheesy axle seal, and it's only held in with a collar with a circlip on it. It's pretty loose by design - everything designed to be installed by hand without needing a press or anything, so the bearings are not tight and the axle seal is pretty loose.

The FAD m190 is a bit tighter, but only because it has a bit more going on in there.

I'd agree with Popo - probably the CV, but I wouldn't change it out until the noise becomes non-stop (or it finally breaks)

Also, standard OEM CVs aren't very expensive - like $150 or so each.

The aftermarket, 32-spline, or "heavy duty" CVs, on the other hand, you would think are gold plated.

I’ve got 82,000 miles on my original ford M210 CV’s. Either they were made on a Tuesday or there is nothing wrong with the OEM axles and folks just gotta wheel smarter ;)

I had a boot torn off in the mud and replaced it because it was cheaper than finding a new boot and fooling with it, but haven't broke one yet - with more miles on the m190 than the m210 ones. Almost same mileage.

I’m not gentle on this machine… but I could definitely wheel smarter 😂 I like to go fast, but also crawl over rocks - really isn’t anything I’m not willing to do with it

I’m not mad at myself or Ford. I wasn’t worried about it, OP just made me want to go look into it more. I’ve been putting up with it for ~40k miles and I’m yet to have any issue with it

I’ve had a couple of hard hits on my front passenger side and I’ve already replaced hub due to failing wheel bearing

I do have some big plans coming in September - solo into the Arizona Strip to wheel and camp along the West Rim and North Rim. Might purchase a spare CV axle to bring, just in case

Thank you both ( @Brian_B ) for the input!

I changed my oil today and was inspecting for loose mounts , etc just as a rundown since I wheel a lot and occasionally have a clunk sounds under the front.
I noticed that same spot on mine wiggles but the bolt was tight.

Guess not just one side making the noise even if I push up down on drivers side will make the noise.
