It is indeed an emergency brake. Try it in an empty parking lot on a Sunday.
Then it’s also the activation lever for the disgronificator, for the same reason.

According to the owners manual, there’s quite a bit of verbiage on the electronic parking brake, but not a single word about an emergency brake:
Ford Bronco I don't know what I don't know IMG_0915
you can use it for whatever you like… but it’s still just a parking brake. Kinda like the doors are also a neat car vandalism device - just try parking close to someone else, and open and close rapidly and fully multiple times. Try it in a crowded parking lot on a Monday!🤣😂🤣

At the Texas Off Roadeo when I went, they spent a few minutes explaining that we have this thing called a "parking pawl" that's this little piece of metal in the transmission that locks the transmission in place and keeps it from rolling. Over time, you can wear it out, so we have "parking brakes" that help prevent wear on the parking pawl. (And then talked about "mechanical kindness" and how to properly set the parking brake to remove the stress on the pawl and put it on the parking brake.) And that they're not really emergency brakes.

It's a parking brake that also works in an emergency.
Which suggests It could be called either one depending on the situation.

It's a 1/2" thick piece of steel that locks the output ring gear from moving. I think a lot of people assume it's this weak thing that's going to break easily. There really is no "wearing it out".
Could it break on a very steep incline/decline? Maybe with enough pressure. But these things are built and designed to hold the weight of the vehicle.
Obviously I would still recommend using it on inclines and declines though just purely for safety.

Well, calling it an "emergency brake" when the manual says "ok use it when rolling if it's an emergency" kinda makes it sound like that's what it's for, when it's specifically for aiding in parking. 🤷‍♂️

It doesn't really bother me if someone calls it an emergency brake (I have and probably will continue to because of course), but it's not wrong to say it's really meant for parking and not (just) emergencies. In a real emergency, you're of course likely to do whatever you can do/think of.

Maybe we can call it a "max immediate stopper switch".

Break, wear out, whatever. Point is the spiel and that they specifically said the parking brake is for parking because of the pawl. At least two people in our small group had had a pawl break on a vehicle they owned.

This is a weird thing to trigger vociferous argument on, too. If you like calling it an emergency brake, carry on. But it is a parking brake.

LOL me showing where the owners manual says it works in an emergency is now a vociferous argument 🤔
Like I said, It's a parking brake that also works as an emergency brake depending on the situation.

I wasn't talking about you specifically. But you are jumping into the middle of it, as did I.

I get what you're saying though.
This reminds me of the people that freak out when someone calls a Bronco a car lol

NOW, WE GOTTA HAVE STANDARDS!! The funny thing is I hate calling it a car (I prefer truck), but then have to specify I mean my Bronco, not my (Chevy) pickup, and by then I should've just called it my Bronco. 🤦‍♂️ My brother the deputy calls it a vehicle. It is an automobile, though! You can use it in an emergency, too... lol

lol why do we have so many different words for the same basic shit. Isn't this why the English language is one of the hardest to learn (or so I've heard)

We have a car, a truck, and a Bronco (wife's), and we often find ourselves saying, your car or mine? But, at least we know what we're talking about. And, I'm certainly NOT going to call the Bronco an SUV!

My dealer didn’t really explain much about the unique Bronco features. Attending an Off-Rodeo would be a great experience - bonus if your VIN can get you in for free.

BTW, a common question, if you haven’t asked already what this feature in the rear cargo area is for:
Ford Bronco I don't know what I don't know IMG_6913

it’s to secure your rear wiper harness and washer fluid feed when you remove the top.
