I can confirm your experience with your Bronco Sport. My son has a 1.5L OB Sport and gets over 34 MPG consistently on higher octane gas, and in the upper 20's on 87 octane.
I am consistently 22MPG, regardless of speed, air conditioning, etc. using only 93 octane, high tier gas in my 2024 Bronco Big Bend, 2.3L manual. Pulling a trailer is the only thing that seems to affect it.
Those little 3 bangers get some SERIOUS gas mileage man. I never got quite that much but I’m glad I’m not crazy!
With my current 2.3L I’m getting about 18 but I think that is mostly to do with the amount of city driving I have been doing… To and from work on my daily commute I am getting about 22 mpg which I’m more than happy with.

At least for me. If I fuel up with a higher octane I see an improvement in gas mileage. Not huge but still consistently get better gas mileage when using even 89 over 87. A little better if I go the next grade up.
Just sayin'
I agree with you, last September I pumped 93 octane on my WildTrak and drove from Wichita Kansas to Pueblo Co, that's 433 miles on a tank of gas cruising between 75-80 MPH. After arriving I still 33 miles to empty, how I wish So Cal would sell 93 oct.

so let's do the math here-- if there is any improvement in MPG --which has been stated to be minimum at best-- and 87 octane is recommended--87 is 75 cents a gallon cheaper than super or ethanol free -- gas is $3.00 a gallon for regular-- you would need to see a 25% increase in fuel economy for it to be worth it. Math just doesn't work for me to

I don't think it's worth the extra cost to run premium in the Bronco, it burns so much gas as it is. It's just not aerodynamic at all. I love mine but it sits a lot. I even put on a MBRB dual CAT back exhaust- it sounds great but only yielded a .1 MPG improvement long term overall. I have done CAT backs on a few vehicles in my time and most have yielded so much more improvement in MPG. I don't do bad in my Bronco- average 22.8, 2 door Sas with 2.7- most would be happy with that.....but my 2023 Colorado with non turbomax 4 banger yields 35 MPG. It's slow as heck but great for my 80 mile a day round trip for work. So the Bronco sits, low mileage on it and weekend driver only.

I run 93 for regular driving. Will switch to 87 while driving long trips burning through tanks. No idea on mileage. But I’m positive there is not enough increase in mpg to make up cost of 93.

I'm sure you're right. But along with the high octane top tier gas we get the detergents that help keep the intake valves clean and reducing blow-by with these direct-injection variants. Also, with the high octane gas, we help reduce pre-ignition.

My Bronco seems to really like our local CountryMark gasoline as well as the Sunoco good stuff.

But whatever you do, never turn off your ASS because that wastes gas and makes it so much more expensive for everyone else--not to mention the vast fumes you spew at idle compared to driving your 15mpg vehicle.

I purchased Bronco for the fuel efficiency. All other vehicles we own (except one that can't be driven in the Winter) have worse gas mileage than Bronco, and wife's job is 125 miles away over the high elevation mountain range. We pump the highest-octane fuel available in all of them (preferably ethanol free if it's available in the area). OBX SAS Mordoor on 35s is right around 18mpg.

Just don't turn off ASS whatever you do.

My wife's fair-weather commuter has a Smartass. You turn it off, and it stays off. Bronco "take off check list" includes disengaging the ASS. Sometimes (in town on short jaunts) I forget to turn it off, and it pisses me off. But since I thrive on confrontation (that includes swearing, threats, and in extreme cases physical violence), I don't want to permanently get rid of the ASShole. It's like Bronco and I have a love-hate relationship (and I like it!).

Bronco holds 16 gallons ( for demonstration sake)
93 cost $4 per gallon . Fill up costs $64
Regular costs $3 per gallon Fill up costs $48
Cost difference $16. This is equal to 5.3 additional gallons of regular .Regardless of any additional mpg using 93 one gets further down the road using regular.
No argument over performance value, but mpg goes to the lower grade.
