CV Boot came off

My CV boot came off font passenger while off-roading yesterday. Hopefully the joint isn’t cooked, but it didn’t sound good by the time I limped it back to the highway for a tow.
Is there anything that can be done to prevent / protect against this happening again?

From your description, it will likely need replaced. If you’re leveled/lifted 2.5” above SAS, the likely cause is your cv angles are too great. Can you post a photo looking straight in, parallel with the ground showing cv and tie rod angles.

Running 37" Toyo Open Country MT with Icon Stage 2 lift I had the same issue coming back from Windrock TN with the boot sliding off and getting debris in side the CV. I had to have both CV shafts replaced under warranty. To avoid this in the future I picked up inner & outer high angle boots from Poly Performance.

I had a stick come up from the mud and poke one of mine off. Was annoying. It started clicking a day or two later.

I know folks have replaced just the boot. From what I recall, the OEM boot was like $100 (try MB3Z-3B436-B), and you could buy the entire OEM CV for about $150 and not have to mess with cleanup, grease, or the possibility that it was damaged and just isn't presenting yet.

Some people have found aftermarket boots to fit for much cheaper - I don't know of one though.

-- I just went to look at CV prices, and appears they have went up significantly - running around $350 right now. You can get the Ford Performance Painted set ($400) for about $50 more than a single CV.

As far as protecting it - CV angle as everyone here has suggested plays into that. Beyond that - ... not really. Maybe LCA skids might help if it was from something exterior (like mine was), but even that's not a sure thing.

If it is in fact the CV angles that are the problem, a diff drop may be your best insurance.

If you are running a 2.5" Zone leveling kit that includes Top Hat spacer and or one on the bottom of the strut then this is a lot of extra droop. I'm running a 1.5" Zone leveling kit with spacers, but I'm also running a broken Innovation diff drop. I'm running this on purpose specifically for the extra droop along with my Badlands non-sas struts. I have not had any issues.
