I don't think there are cam bearings on these.... They spin directly in the aluminum head under oil pressure.
I personally think the oil is draining down to the pan when the engine is off. The cam phasers take a large volume of oil and are high up in the engine, which is why they're failing first.
Of course, I'm just speculating
Does the 3.0 use a vertically mounted canister on top of the engine lacking an anti siphon valve like the 2.7? Not rich enough to know

You mean the oil filter? The oil filter on 2.7 and 3.0 is exactly the same

Yeah I guess I could have been more clear. Thanks!

I remember a few years ago following a bunch of dry-start speculation threads and seeing some folks throw spin-on filter adapters on theorizing it would remedy dry starts causing top end issues

Saw a post a few weeks ago, owner is using the oil priming function (foot on brake, accelerator fully depresses) to crank the engine for 10-15 seconds before releasing the throttle and starting the engine at a normal idle. The theory being oil drains down out of the heads and out of the phasers. The priming functions to pump oil back up into the top end before starting. My Bronco sits for several days at a time, I’m using that process at start up to maybe remove one more variable. Also, make sure whomever changes your oil understands the EcoBoosts require 5w-30. I had an argument with a QuickLube genius who swore all Ford’s use 5w-20. I pointed out the filler cap specs the heavier oil and that only naturally aspirated Ford’s use 5w-20.

Oil draining back out of the phasers while sitting overnight/extended IS 100% the cause of the noise. The "priming crank" trick is a known workaround, and also a good way to diagnose the problem. The phasers are designed to hold oil while shut off, and not leak down, so you aren't fixing anything by doing it this way. I couldn't tell you whether these "bad" phasers are leaking back through the regular oiling circuit, or leaking externally and dripping back into the front cover, but when you install new ones they will always make that noise on the 1st start. There's no real good way to avoid that the 1st time (just never start it the 1st time while the customer is within earshot lol)

I would hope there is some sort of cam bearing. Even so the crank has bearings and this can cause oil pressure drop in the system when at the high range of spec.

i do agree the oil draining back into the pan is a huge part of the proble. I found this Baxter kit that prevents that but it’s 350 bucks not to mention that I bet ford would love to see that attached to the engine when doing a warranty claim. lol

I wish there was an easy way to keep the oil from draining back.

It's a big thing in 3.6 Pentastar land too with the same vertical/top mounted canister filter design

Of course--because it wasn't YOUR twelve grand.

Ponder THAT. What would you do if Ford gave you a $12K headache?
Buy a Coyote V8 crate engine for 10k and a coyote manual transmission for 2k through Ford Performance Parts

Give me back my 86 Ford Escort GT. Ran forever on 20/50 Castrol. Man life was simpler and less worrisome back then.
