How to Prevent Thieves From Hacking Your Key Fob to Your Steal Car – NBC4 Washington

How to Prevent Your Key Fob From Being Hacked
Hackers use a device that tricks your car and fob into thinking they’re close to each other. Within seconds, they can unlock and even turn on your car.

tips on how to prevent your key fob from being hacked:

  • Block the signals from reaching your key fob in the first place. Look for products that block electromagnetic and radio frequency. Faraday bags or cages are highly recommended.
  • You could put your key fob in a metal container, such as a safe. Even a fridge will do, though it’s not 100% foolproof.
  • Keep your key as far away from your car as possible. This makes it harder for malicious signals to reach your key fob.
  • Use other devices, such as a steering wheel lock. At least the thieves won’t be able to drive off with your car.
I use Faraday bags on both sets of keys inside my home, AWAY from all doors !

We we had to get a spare fob for a company vehicle where I work. We had to provide proof of ownership and a copy of the driver’s license of the owner. We then had to bring the vehicle to the dealership to get the fob programmed.

The other method mentioned where they clone the fob by stealing the signal is different.

The cloned fob essentially functions like an already known fob to the vehicle.

Best way to prevent that as mentioned is using a faraday pouch when out and about or a faraday box when you’re home and the vehicle is parked in the driveway.

All of our security tech, low car thefts in general but these occasional clickbait articles always seem to wind up as an advertorial for ”The Club”. Fitting, as it was probably for the ‘80s Philly car-lifting phase in the first place.

That dash idol just demands the matching lyrics be added:

You can buy a Sweet Madonna
Dressed in rhinestones sitting on a
Pedestal of abalone shell
Goin' ninety, I'm not wary
'Cause I've got my Virgin Mary
Guaranteeing I won't go to Hell

You can’t “copy” a key fob just by simply buying one from a dealer.
Key fobs are programmed to the vehicle and not VIN specific at all.
Without the vehicle a key fob is useless.

Unless you’re referring to the small physical key inside the fob? But that won’t start the vehicle, only open the door.
But thieves can program keys using the OBD port just like any locksmith. Some are even boosting the signal from the key inside your house to open and start your car, no key needed.

Sure, but that’s not what the original post said at all 🤷‍♂️

I had my suspicions, but Philly sounds like a terrible place to be this concerned.

That’s the innernets. When you are posting stuff as fact, and proven wrong… just pivot. Change the statement until something sticks
Always throw out ‘well that’s what I heard’ or ‘it would be bad if it was true’

rumor here in Philly lowlifes are copying VIN #'s then going to Ford dealerships and buying key fobs to steal Bronco's

it's impossible getting past the black dots(fritz) and foam that seals the window to the frame to block the VIN

any thoughts

thanks
First they steal the goalposts and burn down the city after a win, then they steal your car. maybe it's time to move to Pittsburgh.

I live in the safest part of Philly, the ne' er do wells come from the dangerous parts, even West of the City like Norristown. They stopped "Stop and Frisk" and Police hands are tied. Here's a map of crime in Philly, I'm in upper Roxborough around 11 o'clock on this map.....

They commute, from what I can tell. Hell, it seems to be profitable, right?
