One thing to note on the brake lines...in the rear you are going to have to fab new ones from the axle hoses to the caliper hoses, or cut and flair your existing ones. On 2.3 this is straight forward, but on 2.7 it uses the boost pump to power the rear brakes. DO NOT let the system leak out while working on it, or you will have to go through a somewhat ridiculous bleeding procedure

Actually I have not seen.... will not have a Bronco until next week... or if I am lucky this weekend, It is a bit unusual to break a knuckle... But again... a concern that hits home for me.

74weld clearly has developed robust racing portals that are thoroughly tested. However the racing beasts are fairly unconstrained from a design point of view. The also have the knowledge base to make these available for us common folk. But some real cost constraints are required for the non beastly version and thus downscaling the design. This always brings challenges and requires longer time scales for R&D and testing. I am not sure the community is patient enough, me included. Who am I kidding, I have a few years before I can scrape together that kind of cash.

very excited to hear some real world feedback on how these behave. Some of you guys are really pushing the envelope for the benefit of all. Much appreciated.

Quinn from 74Weld is NOT that guy. He uses Loren Healy, Vaughn Gitten, Jason Shearer and others to test his products. I believe he said one time, "If Loren can't break it then you can't either."

They talked extensively about Loren Healy being the hardest of hard on equipment in the Portal Talk video and I think they also joke about it on the 2023 KOH Recap video.

Wow! did not know and was not aware.... WOW!... I guess I am glad I am replacing the knuckles now more than ever!

I have to admit that I do think that is rather a one off.... It does appear at least on the surface to be a casting failure which you would hope is very rare.

Not sure I would want to bolt a heavy cast iron portal (lever arm) to that even though I think that was a unique situation. All said it does make me even more glad to have made the decision I have made.

Ahhhh the day Healy broke the internet.

Days before, during the drivers meeting, Dave Cole was talking about the qualifying course and Loren asked if the "rocks" were part of the course. To which Dave replied "If you want to go off those rocks Loren, by all means go right ahead. Those rocks are on the course". At that time I didn't know which rocks he meant, once they started qualifying I knew. I believe Loren was the only one to go off them. Most took the bypass around them.

Only thing about that whole deal was once the race started, after a few miles Loren had to pull over because of something in the left front. Now Quinn uses Spidertrax unit bearing and they are used by about all of the Ultra4 guys, so I feel it was just a coincidence because you just don't see them fail. I know he didn't break anything that Quinn machined/engineered because he has stated such. I think it was "just one of those things".

I was also planning on ordering the Icon tie rods, but Quinn talked me out of it, he believes the Ford HD ones that come with the HOSS 3.0 are really beefy and strong and thinks I will be good. He knows a lot more than I do about it, so I’m going to take his advice.

Ok, that's great. I don't have HOSS 3.0, so I suppose that means whichever is cheaper will do, unless the HD rods come with the stage 3 rack.

The Ford HD rods come with the Stage 3 Rack.... You can upgrade those to the Icons for about $500....

Another issue I have not seen anyone address is that as you increase that ratio your gear teeth are getting thinner.... If you are not changing the material they are made out of they are simply going to be easier to sheer teeth = weaker. Not saying that 5.38 will not hold up... just saying the tooth thickness is a thinner wall than the 4.70 which is thinner than the 3.73 etc...

its a non issue, I have dealt with that stuff in the racing world, you can get the ring/pinion polished/treated/coated to help with that and also maybe set the backlash appropriately so you don't shear them off.

I agree.... I am aware.... I did list the caveat that " If you are not changing the material ".... which you dismissed with "polished/treated/coated to help with that".... It is an issue that needs to be addressed. Some manufacturers do a better job addressing it than others. Only pointing out that it something to be aware of. The tooth thickness is smaller.... that is a simple fact. It can be addressed by a number of methods as you alluded to. Some of those methods are not going to do much for the strength though... such as "polishing"..... Generally I would want to address the issue through the use of a "tougher" alloy that leans heavily into the hardened side. Downside is it becomes more brittle so you have to balance that with some elasticity... but how much? That is R&D time and money.
