I appreciate the reply. I'm in SE MI (Metro Detroit area) and luckily we don't get near the snowfall that you do in the UP. Not seeing a ton of Subaru's around my area of the state and after doing some more reading I agree I can probably get by without 4A but it would be nice to have though. When I was researching 4WD cars late last year, my understanding was that you can switch into 4H when you hit snow, but you have to go back to 2H once you're on bare pavement again. This could be annoying on patchy roads. The auto 4WD system is more like AWD, from what I understand, so it won't have to be actively managed and will keep itself in 2H when its not needed.
I'm in the upper peninsula so not only does it get snowy as hell here in general, in some storms you'll have 6+ inches at higher elevations slightly inland with a light dusting closer to the lake. That's the type of situation where I just want to put it in 4A and not have to think about it.
I'd say if there's tons and tons of Subarus in your area of the mitten, like there are up here, maybe think about getting auto 4WD. If you're in the lower half of the lower peninsula you're probably fine without it.
