2024 BB, 2.3 manual first oil change

I can't speak to the experience of other Bronco folks, but after changing the oil on mine 800 miles past when I intended to (5821), it confirmed that as far as the engine goes, Ford put forth effort and attention to the build. There wasn't the hint of any metallic particles and the oil was still reasonably good. Based on what I'd read I expected the oil filter to be difficult to reach, but it was pretty easy, although I found out about the oil filter drain channel the hard way this afternoon. But for anyone that's been turning wrenches on Ford's since age 15 (I'm 49), Ford kept it simple. I used Pennzoil Premium and for the first oil change, a Motorcraft oil filter I bought from College Station Ford. For non-Bronco owners interested in them, but want to do their own routine maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, etc ... welcome home). It's definitely easier (and cheaper) to do it yourself with the Bronco than to go even to a shop considering removing the plastic skid plate (soon to be replaced by metal on my rig). Others may have had different experiences, but hopefully not too many.

Well, Ford recommends an oil change every 10,000 miles. Likely why your oil still looked good at 5821 miles. Not to dog on all the internet mechanics out there, but Ford engineers know what they are doing and give these recommendations for reasons.

Then I suppose it's a good thing I've been working on Fords since 1990 and am not an Internet mechanic

yeah that drip channel has got me more than once, I hate to admit. It being on the other side of that frame crossmember always seems to get me.

That, and when you pull the oil plug --- it's like I'm 15 again looking at my first playboy. I always have the pan in the wrong spot.

It is possibly the easiest Ford I've had to do routine maintenance on, even with having to drop that plastic skid plate (I just recently got rid of, so will see if the Talon hole can stand up to the spew angle)

That goes for pretty much all the fluids. I hear the Auto Tranny guys have a bitch of it with their pan, but the 7MT was easy peasy.

Lord Henry's recommended service intervals are not in the best interest of their vehicles or the end user.. the only interests they protect are of the company itself.

Feel free to wast your money if it makes you feel better longevity has more to do with how you drive your car, the kind of traffic and the environment you are in. As long as you follow the manufactures recommendation most people should be fine.

Not too many years ago Hondas started seeing early engine failures on their direct injected engines. Carbon making it’s way into the oil attacked the engine equally but the timing chain was the weak link (no pun intended). Extended oil change intervals compounded the problem. People who changed oil earlier than recommended got pretty decent life but rarely if they followed Hondas recommendation. Oil changes are cheaper than major repairs…..

Even cheaper is buying quality products to being with, which left the Honda stable starting in MY1998.

I won't live my life based on "well, no doubt the manufacturer is lying to me and/or screwed up massively when engineering/building this thing, so I'll just change the oil every weekend."

Hmmm yeah every weekend is probably excessive. I’m normally in the 5-6k range. So do you think the Ecoboost is a quality product? I’m not convinced 1998 was Hondas last good year. I had plenty of high mileage mid 2000’s Hondas come thru my shop with only routine engine maintenance. Now if you’re talking about transmissions that’s a different story

It started with the transmissions in MY1998. It went from there, failure after failure.
