Yokohama Geo A/T 4 Experience?

Just ran across these via Discount Tire, and I am very intrigued. They are only 60#, and have 18/32 tread to start with.

Anyone have any experience with them, especially in the mid west winters? TIA.

Yokohama GeoLandr A/Ts on my SuperDuty, over 70k miles and tread is still good, tires are still in balance although theya re starting to get noisy. Best tires I've had on this truck, particularly in area of balance and overall roundness. Discount Tire will stand behind tem if you aren't happy, I'd give 'em a try and let everyone know.

Yokohama is a quality tire manufacturer... However, these are a "new" tire with limited testing, engineering. Essentially they slapped a new tread pattern on an existing carcass. Several independent testers have compared to other tires for specific traction conditions and found them falling behind.

Compared to the BFG that innovated the all terrain segment in 1976 and has continued to improved generation after generation. Massive knowledge base from racing and real world usage. It's in a completely different league. And one of the few companies who test things like rolling resistance (fuel economy) in the all terrain / off road segment.

I'm always surprised when people buy lesser tires (mostly from the appearance) rather than digging into the company who makes them and tire construction.

True, but as you mention, Yokohama is a very well respected brand of both OEM and aftermarket tires. Yokohama actually started as a joint venture between Yokohama Cable and BF Goodrich back in the early 1900's! The Geolandr line has been in production since 1995 so they're not new to off-road tires either. Tires are very subjective, what one person finds noisy, another may find quiet. It also depends on the vehicle they're mounted on. My Super Duty is probably the worst vehicle to evaluate a tire on, F&R solid axles, leaf springs all around, weights almost 4 tons. Whatever a tire encounters that heavy truck and Flintstones era suspension amplify. I use Discount Tire because they will bend over backward to make you happy with your purchase, if this Bronco owner hates the Yoko's, or the BF Goodrich if he goes that route, they'll make it right.

Mine performed great in our especially snowy winter last year, including the fact I was driving over a 2 foot snowbank regularly. My buddy also has them on his Frontier and is equally impressed with them. I have zero complaints. They're also surprisingly quiet (for an AT4/W) on road. Plus white lettering is great looking

Not exactly. However, when comparing tires within a segment it's crazy how people will choose "appearance" and "opinions" over actual substance.

BFG is hard to beat for technology, development and experience.

Toyo/Nitto built a reputation on durability and rugged appearance. And they do hold up well. But not necessary the best traction or light weight. We've run many of them.

Yokohama is extremely experienced in certain segments but limited in off road. Many of their carcasses have a crown and tendency to cup. We've found this true first hand. But could be lesser issue on certain smaller sizes.

Cooper/Mickey T are heavy carcass tires with no regard for rolling resistance but can last well and certain versions have solid off road traction. I've only run one set and not impressed with the overall compromises.

Falken tires... don't see the appeal. And don't think having one model of tire being produced by numerous plants all over the world is a good idea. AT3W/AT4W could be made in China, Japan, USA or Thailand... just depends on the size. They don't have the quality or engineering which is obvious when looking at comparison testing and tire build weights.

And not every size within a model of tire is equal. One brand could build a solid 33" tire but when the same tire is made as a 37" tire it suffers from numerous issues.

Most everything is a compromise but the longer, more established manufacturers and models of tire can be well worth the years of improvement over others.

I love tires and spend lots of time researching and testing myself (on our rigs). I absolutely want the quality companies to get the business over China made crap like Milestar.

They're a road-oriented AT, definitely great for handling, weight, etc. Not as tough or grippy offroad. Not sure about snow. Think meant for road, but capable going off. Just not a good pick for dedicated wheeling/crawling

The off-road AT is the Geolandar XAT, which is unfortunately just as heavy as the common offroad favorites.

In the tire biz we called those outline white letters as opposed to raised white letters, which may be extinct now.
