In all seriousness I wonder if lane keeping assist would have saved him. I admit I always keep my turned off because I like the "flexibility" of exceeding my lane position when there are big vehicles next to me in a curve.

Goddamn. That Bronco he was driving wasn't the reason for his injuries, at least. It was the ID-10-T error produced by the Bronco's driver that caused the crash.
for the uphill offramp off a 50 mph road into of my former base, several folks have been killed trying to avoid wildlife (deer and geese) over the last twenty years.

the last guidance i saw was to hit the goose/deer/wildlife instead of swerving into immobile objects like stone barriers and trees.

Living in Texas with wildlife et al. in the roadways, yeah, don't swerve to miss a doe and take out a family of five head on. I know I've swerved before, it's not always easy to drive into something like that. I just got lucky there wasn't anything in my way.

Indeed as in that case YOU now become the at fault driver.

My brother used to be an OTR trucker and he was taught to maintain his lane of travel, nail his brakes and take the hit.

In my accident earlier this month there was good and bad to the fact I swerved to try to avoid the idiot making a left turn across my lane.

Good was that it probably saved the life of the woman in his passenger seat. As you can see in the picture where I merely gave her door a glancing blow on my way to destroying everything from the a pillar forward.

Bad is that I almost became the at fault driver of a secondary crash but the vehicle next to me had just enough time to see what was happening and brake out of the danger zone. They stopped, called 911 and gave the responding cops a statement that the other driver was totally at fault.

As always, the specific situation can change things.

I was driving in the fast lane (legal in California) on a eight-lane freeway one night when suddenly there was a squealing of tires in a group of cars ahead and to my right. (I suspect someone tried to merge into someone else, causing panicky maneuvers.) A moment later, a car full of passengers screeched to a stop backwards, sitting in my lane at a right angle to traffic and blocking my path.

Fortunately there was a wide paved shoulder to my left, completely clear of obstructions. If I had just tried braking hard I would have hit the car broadside for sure, likely maiming or even killing people. Instead, and making a split-second decision, I did a smooth curve at speed around the back of the car, avoiding an accident entirely.

Fortunately I had enough clear space all around to make this maneuver safely. In a different situation I might have had to react very differently.

Granted a Texas doe, is about the size of a large coon here.

OBVIOUSLY if there is enough warning and room to maneuver safely it is good to do so. The fact that the other vehicle was now stationary helped a lot in your specific instance.

However most crashes happen in a much more compressed time and space window. As an example my crash took place fully within the length of a 4 lane wide intersection. At fault made his move as I entered the intersection and both our vehicles were still in intersection (albeit facing in different directions from when we each entered) after it was over.

It is also important to keep in mind your vehicle's handling characteristics. As taller vehicles such as our Broncos don't react well to being whipped around at speed and you can easily lose control and/or roll.

It's always been the case that hitting the brqakes and letting ABS do its best is far safer than swerving. You have a better chance of stopping short of wildlife since the friction of all 4 tires trying to counteract the rolling momentum of the vehicle is better in a straight line.

My almost-crash happened in a pretty short time window, just over more space due to happening at highway speed. My vehicle was a 4WD Toyota T100 pickup, a fairly tall vehicle about as wide as a 6g Bronco. I just had enough space to make a safe maneuver rather than doing an actual swerve.

We both agree that so much depends on the circumstances of an incident.

I sit here reading about this story and my accident all comes flooding back to me. 23yrs go I was hit in Tampa on one of my motorcycles. On coming mini-van took a sudden left turn into me. Lost my entire leg hip down, broken arms, hip, head and on and on.... busted everything. Life Flight help to the hospital where I was at for over 2.5 months.

I am sooo happy this guy survived. I hope he gets back to living life, working his job...he can with the correct mind set. There are lots of us trauma amputees like myself around that are willing to talk, provide support and Facebook has a couple amputee groups where you can get answers and see prosthetic arms and legs and how we use these.

I am only posting this in hopes this might help him, some he knows or family. Any question anyone has just shoot me a DM. Always happy to talk.
