I was waiting for the wife and I turned on the car to let the air conditioner on. I heard a strange noise. I got out of the car with the car on, and I noticed the noise was coming from the car. There were no indicators that this was harmful to the car. I turned the car off just to be sure.

We were leaving, and the noise came back. So far the temp gauge didn't seem to indicate any issues. However, as we continued to drive, the temp gauge started to climb. We were about to go over a bridge, and the temp gauge reached the read line. Then a red dialog box popped up on screen, and said to turn the engine off asap (something to that effect cause I was driving). We were driving by a shopping complex and I drove the car thru two short right turns with no traffic, then quickly found a parking spot. I think total drive time after red dialog box was less than 30 secs.

Google AI says that there is no safe amount of time to shut off car when red dialog box comes on. Mentioned something about aluminum.

The car is in the shop (one day). They suspect it was a stuck thermostat, and will swap it out and test.

Google AI also says to check the cylinder head gasket. This has me worried.

I was wondering if anyone has had the same experience with this issue? Specifically, once the red dialog box appears, how long have your really got without damaging the car? I got off the road to a safe place relatively quickly.

The car is brand new, almost. Just over 10k miles. Bought last september-ish '25.

Prior to this, it didn't have any real issues besides loose exhaust clamp. Thanks in advance.

Someone, not me (I wouldn't know what to do with them), will be asking if there were any codes. So be prepared.

Google AI, or any AI for that matter, tends to be a brilliant idiot. Unless you ask, you have no idea why it made a comment about aluminum. It may be referring to something that doesn't even apply to automobiles. A blown head gasket could cause such problems, but not very likely. I've been on here for over three years and no one has posted anything about a blown head gasket. Again, AI being an idiot because AI doesn't undertand context of a situation.

Did you notice any steam? If a stuck thermostat, the noise could have been your pressure cap venting. But that's just a guess.

No steam. I'm surprised by how hot it got in a short period of time. Besides strange noise, it was driving fine until I shut it off.

Different engines can take different amounts of overheating. I boiled my Subaru dry when a hose broke. I wanted to get it to a place where I could work on it. The cooling system holds 2 gallons and that's how much coolant I put back in it once the hose was repaired. That was years ago and still running fine. I don't know anything about the Bronco V6.

If an alert came on the screen there should be a fault code stored. Did the shop not check for a fault code? I'd be surprised if it were a stuck thermostat but possible. Another possibility is the intercooler or radiator shutters stuck closed.

Thanks for all the comments. I was a little worried that I didn't stop when I first saw the red dialog box, though, I got off the road pretty quickly - somewhere safe. Then I started reading google ai and got really worried about it. Anywho, I'll let them work on the car. See what happens. Thanks!

I'll bet it's fine and a stuck thermostat sounds very plausible. Pulling over within less than a minute when you got the warning?
That's pretty damn quick. I think you did great, and you just had an unlucky day.
You've probably got plenty of warranty left, so no matter what, you'll be taken care of.
Best of luck - hoping it's something quick.

I can't speak to if there will be any long lasting issues, but Aluminum is most prone to heat related failures than other metals used in engines. It loses more strength at a lower temperature. So it's good you stopped ASAP.

Personally, I would talk to a Ford rep about this and demand an extended warranty on the engine due to this cooling system failure.

Also, you should change the oil ASAP, as overheating oil makes it break down and can lead to varnish/sludge/etc. buildup. An overheating/limp mode engine will also dump lots of fuel into the oil and any wear materials that the overheating caused.

The vehicle would've went into limp mode and severely limited power far before significant damage likely would've been done.
There's a few different stages for the overtemp strategy. Sounds like you were probably only in the first stage most likely.

Wow! Good info. Looks like I was still in the early stage of overheating. Thanks!

What was the sound like?

Did you check to see if your coolant level was lower than normal or did your dealer? I think some broncos brand new get filled up to the correct amount from the factory but only after some driving, the air pockets truly go away and decreases the amount of coolant that is actually in the engine and reservoir. Just my theory since it cannot be explained by me or my dealer. I noticed my coolant was almost under the minimum line when I took my bronco in for an oil change at 7,000 miles. The dealer filled it up no problem and checked for leaks with none found. They only advised me to keep my eye on it. Well I never kept my eye on it. I only remembered to check my coolant again at 15,000 miles since it was due up for service and the coolant looks to be stabilized and haven't lost much or any since then.

Was the bridge you were going across at an angle or anything? It could explain it if it was tilting and lowered your already low coolant level and then gave you the scare.

I'm almost forgetting how it sounded like. I think it was whining or whirring, I think. Something out of the ordinary, and loud.

I haven't checked anything "under the hood" myself. I just had it serviced for something else, and they checked the fluid levels and refilled (at least windshield fluid and tire pressure). Not sure about coolant. Anyways, 3 days later was when this happened. I am due for 10k maintenance soon. Anyways, we went over the bridge at least once a week (back and forth), including the day we were about to go over it again that day. I didn't realize anything about air pockets. I'll keep this in mind from now on, tho. Thanks.
