Just broke a tie rod trying to crawl up a rock face. Is this a common problem? And while I'm replacing tie rods, are there any good aftermarket, stronger replacements?

What bronco do you have? The badlands sasquach 2023+ has the heavy duty tie rods and steering rack.

That being said, yes there are a lot of options for beefed up parts for the steering and suspension.

Tie rods breaking on ifs platforms is common. Not just a ford thing.
Think of tire rods as consumable parts that are sacrificial to protect the steering rack.
You can get beefed up ones from ford performance or aftermarket.
Carry a spare if you’re going to be rock crawling because you will break more over time. It’s not always the one obstacle that breaks them, they fatigue over time from impacts to the front wheels.

It's easier and cheaper to replace a tie rod than it is a rack, especially on the side of the trail.

Don't upgrade. Keep the fusible link.

^^ 100% this. The force that broke your tie rod, with thicker tie rods is going to go somewhere else. I think you really do not want that somewhere else to be the part that fails in place of your tie rod. Throw a spare in the truck and call it a day; tie rod is an easy fix. components further up stream are not so easy to fix.

What exactly were you doing? Were your front wheels turned while you were giving it gas with the axle locked? And is your Bronco lifted with oversized tires? All are factors leading to breaking tie rods.

At Off-Roadeo they advise to keep steering straight when using front lockers.

It was 2024 that the BL got the HOSS 3.0 rack and FP tie rods. I have a 23 and it came stock with HOSS 2.0.

The cheapest thing to do is get spare inner rods and a tie rod kit and know how to use it. You can swap to a HOSS 3.0 w/FP tie rods, but beware the official FP rack and process is broken and doesn't work for a lot of people, even going to a dealer to get it done. Using the thread BigMeatsBronco started here with the full process works best, but if you can't/won't do it yourself, you'd need to find a dealer or shop willing to work with you. Expect $3k give or take. And you probably still want spares. 😬

From their other thread, looks to be a 21 OBX, didn't say if it was factory Sasquatch or not.

I was with a group of Broncos running Top of the World and one of the guys broke a tie rod we had a replacement tie rod installed in about 45 minutes. A good chunk of the time was getting him off the rock and into a better spot to do the repair.
I carry a pair of tie rods and all the tools needed along with the badlands 1.5ton off road jack, just in case.
