What are the long term consequences of PPF.

Has anyone had ppf on an outdoor not garage kept vehicle 10 years or longer?

Does it still look great or is it getting degraded by the elements?
Cracking or yellowing?

Has anyone removed it after 10 years, did it lift paint off in any locations or leave residue or breakup when being removed?

Not all PPF is equal. As you know, the sun (UV rays) are brutal. Here in Florida, it will take no time to see the yellowing cracked PPF.

For it to be properly done you will need the paint corrected and coated. Then the legit ppf applied. If its done properly then the ppf can be easily removed by a professional and reapplied. Lifespan depending on conditions. Once ppf is yellow or cracked then its up to the warranty with ppf and installer. The right way cost thousands.

I put PPF on my headlights before having my Bronco ceramic coated.

The owner of the bodyshop did it to his Mercedes. After 10 years his headlights were still clear.

Repaint vs PPF, not my Bronco and it’s not a show car but it’s time for one or the other so I was hoping some people with long term experience will share some info.
Maybe the adoption of full wraps is just to new and/or those using it don’t keep the cars long term to see the potential downside.
I know the clear PPF we had from the dealer lasted about 7 years and cracked and has become a pain to remove once cracked.

It's also dependent on the color of your vehicle. The yellowing over time is much less noticeable on darker color paints.

Don't get PPF through dealers their vendors use the cheapest stuff they can find get it done art reputable ppf place with written 10 year warranty in hand.

Should not yellow at all in 2026.

I do the entire front end incl lights and at min lower sides when new. Did my entire black Mustang convertible and looked like new after 3 years all season driving resulting in a high sale price and $7K in pocket after lease payout.

But are those 10 year warranties any good, I mean if no one keeps a PPF vehicle that long they have no idea if it actually held up.
In 5 more years are we going to start seeing used cars with cracking nasty exterior wraps all over?
I’m 24 years into ownership of my truck with no plans of selling it. I’m trying to determine the long term viability and hassle of modern PPF.

I had a black 991.2 911 that lived its entire life outside during the four years I owned it. I bought it used with 25,000 miles on it and sold it with 70k. I had XPel and ceramic coating put on it right after I bought it. The prep work made all the difference and the car looked completely perfect the day I sold it (for $4000 less I had paid for it four years and 40+ thousand miles earlier). The amount of wear and tear this thing took in the PPF was crazy. Rock chips, blown umbrellas, cross country road trips, salt, and snow. Perfection.

My 22 Braptor is also XPelled and man, once it’s washed (a bit dirt right now), it just looks amazing. Not saying this is for everyone, but for us, worth it and impressed by how long it lasts,

Oh, one last thing - we PPFed the front of our 2017 Chrysler Pacifica when we bought it in the summer of 2016. The front, the mirrors and the headlights look perfect. It’s a stored outside since day one, driven hard and put away wet for 160k miles. The front looks perfect, the rest look looks exactly like you would expect Chrysler product to look after that long outside.

Mad props to all the freaks posting in this thread. I could care less about how my Bronco looks. At 45K miles it has only been washed once, and that’s because a buddy gave me a free token. Last month I ran into a barb wire fence. I don’t care.

Just my experience, i have a 2016 black Lexus rx that is ppf‘ed(expel, at the time it was 5 year warranty ) there was paint correction done first. The car is black, so I can’t speak to yellowing but the ppf started hazing around year 8. We had a shop replace the ppf with no issue. They steamed it off did a correction. Car has lived its whole life outside. So we are at 10 years with a black car with no swirls and great looking paint.

Unless you can diy repaint with aircraft grade ppf wort every penny IMO.

I bought the hard body armor to save a lot because all the Bronco vertical angles will even torture ppf.

PPF will always start so show some yellow on over white or silver paint in time regardless of what XPEL, 3M, SunTek, etc say in their promotional materials. It's simply unavoidable due to UV exposure, air pollution, and general aging of the film. However it's also dependent on how you clean (regularly) and maintain it (top if off with ceramic protectants). High quality films should last 3+ years before you start to notice slight yellowing and it's generally not overly noticeable on fully wrapped panels as it's when you only do say 1/3 of the hood where you may start to notice a difference where the cut line ends to unprotected paint. On dark colored paints it's generally not an issue as long as you maintain it well.

Had this done in 2003 on my EXT that was garaged most of it's life. Started showing signs of cracking about 5-7 yrs ago. Tried to remove the film from the headlights & it was a nightmare with a steamer, came off in tiny pieces. But hopefully the new stuff holds up better (with a ceramic coating on top). I have no idea how it will come off of the paint, but someone mentioned boiling water? I doubt the Bronco pinstripe & emblem sticker will survive if I ever had to take a section off of my Heritage. But the peace of mind of never scratching the paint is worth it IMO.
