New member tire and wheel questions…

Hello all. Just joined from the greater Atlanta area in sweltering Georgia. Getting ready to trade in a new-ish M3 to get into a Bronco and I’m trying to reason through all the threads I’ve been reading on wheels, offset, crash bars, drivability, etc. The “custom guy” at the dealer I’m talking to isn’t super helpful with, what I feel, are basic questions so I’m bringing it to the smarter people here.

Here’s what I’m looking at…Badlands with Sasquatch trim and I’d like to have a little poke with new wheels. This vehicle won’t be a serious off road rig but may see light work - mostly just looking for some fun with the top off and a more aggressive look. Would a 20x9 (or maybe a similar width in 18”) with a neutral offset work for this application without having to do anything more to the vehicle? Which tire to go along?

Vehicle will be PPF’d so I’m less worried about rocks and such but, end of day, that’s just part of it. Thanks for any recommendations you have.

That’s not the look I’m after. The dealer has a build in the showroom based on a non-Sasquatch trim which has some poke but I’d prefer the wider ones. Thanks.

A 20 with a 33-inch tire will work; you will just need to remove the crash bars. If that is the look you are going for. I'm really happy with mine.

In a SAS Bronco, you would already have your crash bars removed and you have 35" tires stock.

To get some poke, the standard wheel offset I have seen in the aftermarket are -12 mostly. There are some -10 and 0 offset. I think if you want minimal poke, get the 0. I have -10 and I get about .5" or 1" of poke, from the SAS fenders (can't visually remember how far out it pokes). -12 would be just slightly more poke.

Your SAS wheels would be 8.5" wide. 9" wide would not be visually much different since your tire would cover most of that up. Different manufacturers also have different widths even if they say 12.5". 12.5" seems to be the max common width for 17s. Maxxis Razar MT has a 13.5" though I might try those once mines need replacing for a wider look. I know you mentioned going 20s but I haven't looked into 20" tires since it is not my cup of tea.

Word of advice, stick with 17 or 18 inch rims. Maybe I'm just too used to seeing off-road broncos, but when the wheel gets big and the tire gets thin, it just looks off. Leave those proportions with the M3.

With SAS fender flares, you'd want a +18mm offset rim for just a bit of poke. Could also do +12. 0 offset would give you a full inch of poke.

Id recommend an on-road AT for your use case. Something like a Yokohama Geolandar A/T4. Still an AT that you can off-road with, but will have better mpg, handling, noise, wet traction, etc than a heavier aggressive AT or RT.

Stock SAS is +33 offset and, with the wider SAS fender flares, supposed to be roughly no poke from the flare (although about 3” from the fender).

0 offset would get you about 1.5” of poke on the same tire (315x70r17). A 35x12.5r17 is nearly the same size but usually just a hair wider than the stock Goodyears

Most folks will strongly recommend a 17” rim in 8.5-9” width for the greater availability of off road tires to fit.

Another way to get poke is to swap for the thinner non-SAS fender flairs - they are about 1.5” narrower

IMO for mild poke keep OE off set 17 or 18 and upside tire. Even PPF gets trashed with road rash splatter and rocks.

That last part is a great suggestion. I‘m picking up the vehicle on Saturday and will wait a bit before jumping into any new wheels as there’s plenty of other stuff I’d like to get for it sooner.

Another option is just get tires that are actually wider. I have a BL Sas and upgraded to Maxxis Rzr M/T's, which are in reality actually 13.2 wide? I get a small, maybe quarter to a half inch, of poke. They are 35x17x12.50. The stock GY's are pretty narrow in practice. I have no rub, stock everything else.

You can also get a small wheel spacer. The wider you go, the more scrub radius, which can wear things out faster, so I'd recommend staying at 0 or positive offset.

Also, the tire selection problem is real. If you like the look of 20's, sure, but be aware 17" with 8.5/9" rim widths gives you the highest number of options by far in 34-37.
