Straight arm out for left turn, Bend arm out for right turn. But I would not try this with a police officer observing me - may not be a legal substitute for using the car's turn signals or the young officer may be totally clueless as to what I was doing

Don't forget hand down palm showing for braking/stop.
Plenty of "hand signals" live on... Like the one used to signal disdain when cut-off by another driver, etc., etc..
