Renault head Carlos Ghosn, one of the most brilliant automaking CEOs of our time, saved Nissan. But over the years, certain Nissan and government individuals felt it was a loss of face for Nissan to be controlled by Europeans
And of course our media, both general and automotive, showed zero interest or ability to penetrate what really happened here....

My first 4x4 was a 2000 Xterra. It was a great vehicle. The tag line at the time was "Everything you need, nothing you don't" (or something like that!). It handled the snow and mud great and gave me over 100K trouble free miles until it was in a t-bone accident. In 2000 it was a refreshing difference from the other SUVs out there with its rugged styling and relative affordability. I'm interested to see what this next gen version ends up looking like. When I first got my Bronco, it reminded me a bit of the feeling I had when I got the Xterra, a fun to drive vehicle in a sea of otherwise boring / cookie cutter vehicles.

In case Jeep/Dodge build quality isn't bad enough for you, try Nissan!

Seriously? Those "greens" as you call them are the same people screaming for renewables. I think they care what is going into the environment from EVERY source... Damn.... all you have to do is look at what they are writing.... and saying...

AND yes there are always NIMBYs.... (not in my back yard) and then there are BANANAs (build absolutely nothing anywhere near anything.)

I am all in only because it simply creates a faster more powerful vehicle that will last much longer. I do not think they are quite ready for prime time YET... but they will be very soon. If you understand life cycle curves it clearly point to this outcome.
What indication do you have that an EV would last any longer than a standard vehicle? A properly maintained gas or diesel engine will last for quite a long time. Frames and bodies will rust the same, interiors will degrade the same, glass lasts the same, the electronic workings/actual computer hardware lasts the same. If anything? The EV will have a shorter lifespan than a standard vehicle based on the lousy battery technology alone.

The vehicles may be ready for "prime time" soon (5 years?) But the infrastructure, electrical grid and electricity production and cost will likely never be there. If you understand unions, gov't contracts and the snail's pace at which this type of work gets done you'll understand that none of us will be alive by the time EVs are both "prime time" AND able to be sustainable for our society on a large scale.

Nissan build quality is fantastic. Literally #1 among all mass-market brands. Second overall only behind Lexus.

I've owned a ton of Nissan/Infiniti vehicles and they're all superb inside and out. Ran forever with minimal maintenance. Never had a major malfunction or costly repair on any of them.

This is true - they make good vehicles

Just mostly boring vanilla stuff anymore though that fills up car rental lots

True. The Z car is still nice and the newer pathfinder is a solid family hauler. The infiniti line is nice for family haulers too.

I'm actually moving in the direction of a Z car or q50 red sport project build next. Small at first (intakes/downpipes/exhaust/tune/cooling) and then fuel delivery, larger turbos, etc. They make power very easily and the engines and trannys handle it well. If I go the Z route, it will get a supercharger. We'll see

Initial build quality is not the same as built well. You're lying to yourself.

Ever other sedan I see on the road today is some flavor of Nissan

You are right, that doesn't necessarily mean it's "good" - 25 years ago that was the Dodge Neon, and Prius 10 years after that.

But that Nissan I see is usually older model - 20teens, not brand spankin' new. I'm guessing mostly bought from Carmax/etc as ex-Rental Fleet models. So the fact they are still pushing down the road en masse does say something.

(New cars almost everything where I am is either Tesla or Kia/Hyundai any more)

They're clapped out and worth $2k. It's an economics thing, not a good car thing.

Bro...you're driving a ford talking about build quality. I think YOU are the one lying to yourself.
Nissan, Toyota and Honda outlast anything on the road.
I love my Bronco, don't get me wrong. But is it a 70k vehicle in terms of quality?Absolutely not. Will this junky interior and dash last a decade. Possibly? We shall see. I'll likely dump it before then anyway

^^ this. My Mustang's a 2008. It's got over 230k miles on it. That puts it at 18 years old, and that old 4.6 is still running strong. I highly doubt that any of the EVs currently out there will make it to 18 years and over 200k miles on the same battery. Someday maybe, but we're not there yet. And honestly, I don't think we will be because nobody profits from a vehicle lasting that long outside a few of us who like to keep our vehicles.

I’m not an EV fanboy but you should probably check some facts here. There are ~a lot~ of Teslas running around with >200k on the original battery

I said highly doubt, not a statement of fact, and you're ignoring the 18 years part. Time plays a role on the battery chemistry too.

Excellent point that I forgot to touch on. Vehicles, just like most other items, are not designed to last for long periods of time. Their lifespan is finite and engineered to be optimal to benefit the manufacturer. They aren't going to make any extra-long-lasting cars anytime soon. Lol
