Software update 25S49 for frozen screen and Black screen

Received the letter from Ford today saying they have released software update 25S49. It looks like this is going to not need a dealer visit unless it doesn't load properly.
It should take about 8 hours to install.
How to know if it is installed ?
Anyone else see this ?

Not sure you will be able to tell, unless the software release notes say something about it after being updated.

Any dealership can tell you if it has been though by looking at connected data and OTA update history.

Got the same letter yesterday. Guess I'll have to let the updates that it had been bugging me about finally happen. Hope I don't lose any of the screen animations but it's the chance I'll have to take...

It depends on how far behind the vehicle is when you start updating the relevant modules.

The problem is, you can only update as far as what Ford has released for the vehicle. Many people have taken their vehicles in to get it done, and the dealer updates as much as they can, but never get the validation code in FDRS to clear the recall because the update isn't available for said vehicle. In my case, my F150 is on Sync 24127 and I do not show any pending updates for the APIM, GWM or TCU, so the recall cannot be done to my truck even with FDRS.

It's a shit show. Ford needs to get their shit together.

8 hours seems a little excessive. Are their servers running off an old dial-up connection?

Wouldn't be surprised if a lot of that time consists of the Bronco uploading data to Ford for research selling to Google and then downloading an 8kb patch to fix the camera at the very end. I have zero trust with automakers these days. Tesla just changed their startup screen into an ad for the new Tron movie. That's beyond messed up.

Unfortunately this cynicism is warranted. The interests of the the manufacturers and the interests of the consumer are just too far apart for the "software enabled vehicle" to be anything other than an annoying anti-consumer $ad machine$ sooner rather than later.

I really just want to use my phone for nav/onx and music. I don't need much else out of infotainment. I want to be able to use my locker / 4wd if a part gives out in the middle of nowhere. I want to use my sway bar disco in any 4wd mode and rear locker when I want. not based on a parameter.

Also, no governor.

APIM updates can be up to 6GB. It's taken me an hour or more just to download the files needed for the USB update using FDRS. Regardless of your internet speed, downloading stuff from Ford's servers is painfully slow.

Probably makes no difference - that’s when most people have auto updates set for it probably has just as much traffic

IMO there simply is no incentive structure to ever give you any of this. Even if the aftermarket "hacks" such control, the incentive(s) is for the manufacturer to encrypt/change the underlying hardware/software infrastructure to regain control. They might tolerate it in part in limited circumstances, but only when it aligns with their interests (e.g. the tuning aftermarket helps the image and thus marketing machine of the manufactures in general, though it presents regulatory and legal liability issues as well, so they walk a line).

What you want is the mechanically focused vehicle of the 60's/70's, but that does not exist anymore outside of guys fabricating their own vehicles/buggy's.

You would think so since in theory, there would be less bandwidth being used during off-peak hours, but I would keep my expectations low as far as that making a big difference.

Also, Ford recently changed the way they provide FDRS access and it now costs $120 for 2 day access instead of $50, so brace yourselves.

This update has been out for over a month now. I was sitting on a 24 black diamond for months for the dealer to sell. Month now after update and sale with no issues. Just got another notification that it needs to be updated again and could take 30min to 8 hours. I just scheduled it in the bronco to start at 10pm on selected days. Plenty of time to update if 8 hrs is needed.

I can tell you that the servers OTA's work on and the FDRS servers are different. Also, auto-updates is only to install the update if it requires the vehicle to be inhibited after the files are downloaded. By the time auto-updates installs (or tries to install) the update, the files are already off the cloud.

See screenshot from a random vehicle's OTA dashboard below. In this case, the files were downloaded and ready 3 days before the OTA actually installed. You can see the vehicle reporting the battery data to the cloud over the course of a few days before eventually the OTA trigger puts the vehicle in inhibit mode to install it in the middle of the night.
