LOL - that's a pretty good list to make sure that you're self sufficient.

Most people only need the ONE thing...
(can you guess?)

Anyone opt for a satellite communicator like a Zoleo or InReach, or a spendy satellite navigator like the Garmin Tread2? Or the high-end walkie-talkie LTE radios like Rapid or Rocky Talkie?

I’m a proponent of rear winch for the bronco. We had both front and rear and while they both get used, the approach angle getting killed just wasn’t worth it.
Yes…. But can do one winch two receivers. Many make the mount.

Absolutely a great option. Just one of those things like I mentioned before-hopefully you can use/access the mount when you need it. Sometimes the ramifications of your decisions sneak up at inconvenient times 😉

I guess it all boils down to is there is no "one size fits all" way to confugure a Bronco. It really depends on where you live, where you want to go and what you intend to do when you get there.
Yeah, I now live in SW Utah, near the north edge of Zion Natl Park. There’s trails everywhere, but you get out of cell coverage quickly. I’m new to off-road excursions, and I’d like to be able to get out there solo and really just explore the area. Not really interested in anything very technical, but it’s hard to know when a route can get hairy for a stretch. My expeditions thus far are really just to find good secluded camping spots.

So I’m reasonably confident I can steer clear of needing a winch for a while. But navigating and communicating (in an emergency) is important. I’m good with OnX and its offline functionality, but man it’s CarPlay app UI sucks. The Garmin Tread2 functionality is actually very cool and tempting (true live turn by turn topo mapping via satellite, allowing easy change of plans and spontaneous exploring).

Hey @SierraBronco … your tie rod recommendation stands even if one has the severe duty rack?

Good news is Matt’s Off-Road Recovery is in my area code. 😎

Eh, I'd say the only thing you need is trail etiquette. The rest is an excuse to buy neat stuff for your rig.

I normally just send it with none of the listed must haves. But I'm also not doing SierraBronco level wheeling (yet?!?). Just putt putting along on green-blue onX trails.

edit: 1st aid is always good to have.

Yessir. They’re still designed to be the fusible link that protects the steering rack. But as discussed in the thread, I suppose it really comes down to personal use. If you are just cruising on fire roads then you’re probably fine without them. I figure they don’t take up much room and we have a sweet toolbox, so they’re basically always with us. Boots seem to be holding up okay.

Yes having options is key..

since it portable, if you have long cable or rig without winch near then you have other rigging options. Tie it to tree rock vehicle land anchor etc

In the old days having different ideas on what was helpful to design recovery rigging

Thinking back over 50 years of this stuff and what I've used the most and to most benefit, in order of usefulness:

1. A brain to determine when discretion is the better part of valor and to determine a course of action. (profile pic shows lack of this item, Pritchet Canyon in a Bronco II, which in thinking back probably only had #12 and 8)
2. Tire chains, yeah really.
3. Tires resistant to puncture (read LRE non Goodyear)
4. Tow strap/chain
5. Shovel
6. Tools to match my ability.
7. A jack capable of lifting high and a healthy fear/respect of it.
8. Spare tire
9, A means to jumpstart.
10. Reliable communication
11. Random stuff that I just happened to have in the vehicle that became vital.
12. Winch

Two winches, I use both, I wheel alone any time I want. GMRS. I carry a lot of tools. Some parts. Shovel, axe, FNFAL, food water. first aid. various straps chains block tree savers D-rings. knives 2 tarps. rain jacket. extra lights TP, gloves, towels, rags, and cleaning wipes. I think that's it besides the two pistols I carry. No 911 in the out of doors...
GMRS enables emergency comms? Or are you having to connect to someone you know? No details on the pistols? 😎
