It also helps if you have something to connect a winch to. A rarity where I am unless there's another vehicle with you. It's illegal to hook up to a cactus.
There is a recovery hitch for use in sand/dirt where there are no trees or rocks, but it’s pretty large. I can’t recall the name, but it’s steel and folded up about the size of a good sized set of recovery boards.

Great for folks that do a lot of dune running or deep desert stuff though

I guess it all boils down to is there is no "one size fits all" way to confugure a Bronco. It really depends on where you live, where you want to go and what you intend to do when you get there.

Shovel, first aid kit, bronco tool kit (or any tool kit that has the necessities) are always in mine, and a knife/lighter/for extinguisher.
I've used all of these non wheeling

On the trail, 💯 recommend a winch if you doing technical stuff, as well as all that comes with it. And spare tye rod. Water is good, gas never every needed but have came close (still carry it, I use it at home for the mower if I don't use it)

That’s the thing I sweat when solo in the sand or similar - it’s bring (or plan to bring next time) and anchor.

Yeah I always look at rotopax and think what’s the point. And most of them I see down in town are crushed in where people don’t realize that 9,000 ft of elevation change affects their non-vented cans. They probably nearly exploded at the top of the mountain.
A buddy burped mine near to top of Imogene last week. It splattered has face.

Note: I don’t have a winch, and don’t plan on getting one at this point)

Expensive, but maybe worth it?
Lol… like you most/all trips will be single vehicle.

w/20% off at $800.00 a winch is cheap. I said fk a high jack, track boards etc

got winch gear, shovel, land anchor…

Very expensive… a good used boat anchor ‘danforth’ packs flat… 25-35 pounder.

need more dig her in… easier than a tire or log to do. Or two rebars on either side of anchor

I consider a winch like insurance. When you need it, you are glad you have it. Otherwise, its just hanging around.

I have full recovery gear and such when I go out, and honestly, I hope I never have to use it.

Two winches, I use both, I wheel alone any time I want. GMRS. I carry a lot of tools. Some parts. Shovel, axe, FNFAL, food water. first aid. various straps chains block tree savers D-rings. knives 2 tarps. rain jacket. extra lights TP, gloves, towels, rags, and cleaning wipes. I think that's it besides the two pistols I carry. No 911 in the out of doors...

Not equipment but good policy: Tell someone reliable where you're going and when you expect to be back.
Emphasis should be placed on the “reliable” bit. This comment will make more sense once I’ve finished my novel AKA the Rubicon Trip thread 😬😬

And yes. Spend the extra money on another extinguisher that isn’t dry agent. We’re now carrying both as the dry agent could still be useful for situations not related to the engine compartment or around electronics.

I’m sure someone else mentioned it but I haven’t read through the whole thread yet, but spare tierods with the ability and knowledge on how to change them. I haven’t broken one, but I have given away four of my spares to other rigs that have. And used my tools to get the fix done. Would’ve made for their day to be much longer without those spares.

I thought about a winch and decided it was too much weight and bother for something that would be seldom if ever used. Ask people who have a winch if they've used it and what the situation was. Most I talk to have never used it or used it to rescue others. Good planning and knowing your limits and the limits of your vehicle go a long way.
Ooooooo! Ask me ask me ask me!!

OP if you do decide to get a winch, unless you spend a few bucks to get the setup that goes between the frame rails, I’m a proponent of rear winch for the bronco. We had both front and rear and while they both get used, the approach angle getting killed just wasn’t worth it. So it’s now sitting in a pile of other parts we pulled off. Like LP6 lights from Baja Designs. The same “what if” arguments apply to rear only that could be used for front only, so unless you run both it’s a moot point. Would also recommend reinforcing your front frame horns, even without the winch. Winch direction can be changed with either option using three snatch blocks, assuming you have enough line and anchor points. They aren’t only used as doublers 😉

Of course an awesome option is what Calvin did. Just gotta have mounts and wiring ready. And of course-the ability to use them. I was running a manual disconnect under the hood. That’s all fine and dandy until your hood is six feet in the air and you can’t get to it. Same goes for your shackles. Now it’s hooked up to a relay. And shackles are on the overhead molle panel.
