Took a road trip, a couple “full” tanks seemed like they were working down quickly; paid closer attention at a fill up:

Can’t top off the tank, the pumps shut off. This is a new one to me. Level ground, level unloaded Bronco, nothing serviced in or near on the gas tank recently. Never ran it down to empty. Any ideas?

Could actually be full and something wrong with the sending unit instead.
Think we’ve seen that a handful of times

Thanks. That would be a straightforward, if unexpected one at 14K miles, but what else is new on the list of odd things that fail early on.

I’ll put some fuel cleaner in and run til the next dealer visit, maybe they will warranty it if it doesn’t clear up.

Or do myself if they don’t - I have half dropped the tank, to put armor on, is it easy to pull out all the way and put a sending unit in?

Yeah once the tank is down it takes 5 minutes to swap it out. You’ll need the whole pump assembly unless you can find something wrong with the factory one and fix it. Ford doesn’t sell the sending unit separately

Did your range go down?
Yes for sure it did - per the tank screen and the “50 miles til empty” message. But I have not tried to drives at empty for another 40 miles or something.

My ‘07 wrangler does something similar. The gas pump constantly cuts off during a fill up. I have to pump the gas real slow, snail pace, can’t even use the slowest locked position in the handle. But it does eventually get gas all the way up filler neck. Can you do that?

I tried that, and used to pump gas for my job. No this is a brand new thing. It’s probably the sending unit and “float” if there is one that failed for one reason or another.

I'd run it to empty then fill it up n see how many gallons it takes n maybe watch the gauge as it fills.

Is that at all gas stations or just a couple? Each time it clicks off a small amount of fuel you paid for goes back into the stations tank. Early cut off indicates that the seal is defective which usually indicates a nozzle issue and should be brought to the station managers attention.

maybe you have a leak in your vapor recovery system on your Bronco if it happens at all of them. Its not supposed to do that. There is a tsp on this issue?

Thats good. I am going to get a 2dr Bronco 25 model year now it gets better gas mileage. With gas at $5.60 in Ca. were i frequently go I don't wish to go back to a 17mpg vehicle again. My 2014 CMAX ENERGY that i bought two years ago when my f250 was getting new injectors has me spoiled with an everything average of 44mpg and my last tank took me almost 1000 miles according to the trip meter between fill ups. That came out to i think 83mpg on that tank. That was only because i charged it every night and often only went short trips so no gas was used.

A couple years ago I bought a 2016 Energi to replace the 2007 Prius my son was driving. No regrets. Damn fine car. Boy, I wish Ford still made cars like that... (well, except for the turning radius of a battleship)
