Took me 3-4 hours to get the old CV out on my m190, lots of swearing and beating to get the diff end to pop out. Apparently it's easier on the m210, I have heard.

20 minutes to get the new one back in.

As much work as it is, sometimes it still beats hiking miles back to the trailhead to either get cell service or hope you can flag someone down and get them to stop.
You have a thread on this expressing your rage in the process

I think the trail repair part comes down to experience. Personally I don’t think it’s a tough job, but I’ve taken them out I can’t even tell you how many times due to portal issues. So now it’s not even a thing. Same with steering rack. Swapped two of them on the trail now. Just kinda yawn at the thought. But the first time we swapped it out in the garage it took a minute.
I can't remember where, but I was talking to some folks (maybe on here) about having a race where halfway through you had to change stuff out on the trail.

Yeah, I thought maybe something like 37's going out, change shit up, 32's on the way back, or something.

As far as the question on the thread, just get the CV's for the front. Those are the ones you want.

oh. Yeah that’s cool too. I thought you meant something like “okay at the top you’re going to swap out the D44 with a D60 then head back down”

That may actually be easier than swapping out CVs, apart from carrying an entire rear axle assembly.

Oh no, that is what I meant. It would also require some hijinx like smaller tires...

Makes me think of how they had to run without shocks for a day at the offroad games. That was cool for wifey to see

I need to watch the recap; I also saw a little bit when they were towing some military equipment.

The way I would change a cv would be to lift tire off ground, pull tire off, undo lower coilover bolts, undo lower control arm bolts, zip off cv nut, pull knuckle out till cv pops out of knuckle, strap knuckle up and out of the way, pull out cv from diff or intermediate shaft housing.

I’ve heard of some folks doing the UCA instead of LCA so they don’t mess with the alignment but having done it the LCA way not entirely convinced that’s better or not.

Personally I wouldn't buy spare front axles & in the rear you are more likely to smoke the R&P. If you grenade a front one, you can still limp along in 3 wheel drive, especially if you have a winch, or at the least have a buddy / another vehicle with you.
YMMV 🤠

How do you get it to stay in 3WD? In the couple of cases we blew an axle on the trail. It turned off 4WD and only allowed 2WD

Well that sucks. Resetting the battery didn't help? I would think in theory, once reset and the wheels moving forward again should allow it as I don't see anything monitoring the axles themselves but the wheel sensor, unless a 190  But I've been wrong before 🤷‍♂️
