So I have about $400 reward points to spend and thinking I should buy a spare CV. Which one would be the go to. I'm wondering if the one I don't buy breaks out on the trail, can I pull it apart and make a good one, either side, if the broken CV center section is intact. I'm assuming that the center section are the only difference. Input?

If you’re worried about the intermediate shaft, Mitchell diff can make you a replacement out of 300M. They’ll also have a steel housing available soon

I’m a reasonably decent shade tree mechanic (but nowhere near a real mechanic) who just replaced the driver’s half shaft on my 2022 badsquatch because of a leaking boot. It’s a big job. I may have some of the terms wrong but here goes. To get the shaft out you must separate upper and lower ball joints, tie rod end, sway bar, brake caliper, speed sensor, etc. All to get the half shaft out of the knuckle. The nut on end of the shaft is 35mm. Running that nut out by hand will take some effort. I used an impact. The knuckle w/ the rotor is heavy. I took the rotor off to lighten the knuckle. Reassemble in the reverse order. Torque on the half shaft nut is 221 lb-ft. Bring your big torque wrench and a friend to hold the brake while you’re tightening it. I had to stand on the wrench. Several floor jacks, jack stands, and a helper. I couldn’t get the bottom ball joint loose, so a bought a separator tool from Amazon.

I just can’t imagine doing it on the trail. I haven’t thought through what one needs to do to get off the trail if Trail Mater isn’t around. Perhaps others with much more knowledge will chime in. Can you pull one apart and fix it on the trail? Don’t know, but you still have to do the above to get at the cv shaft.

I think the trail repair part comes down to experience. Personally I don’t think it’s a tough job, but I’ve taken them out I can’t even tell you how many times due to portal issues. So now it’s not even a thing. Same with steering rack. Swapped two of them on the trail now. Just kinda yawn at the thought. But the first time we swapped it out in the garage it took a minute.

A very good point. It was my first one. It’s good to know that a little practice makes it easier. I guess that’s how it is w/ most everything.

I wouldn't have an issue doing it out on the trail. It is a job but if you got the right tools, it beats beating on your rig to get out or paying that hefty offroad tow bill!

I would just buy the Ford Performance CV axle set. Since you will most likely kill the inner joint so might as well carry both. If you snap the intermediate shaft in the front you are most likely going to need to do a parts run no matter what. I would limp off the trail before doing either reapair if possible.

You are super qualified! I see a dead blow, a ballpeen hammer and f*(& it model!

I stock the ford performance. Just recently I ordered a set of cv axles and they shipped me 2 sets… maybe you’ll get lucky too ;)
Hopefully! 😎

Although heavy as noted, leave the knuckle assembled if trailside. After backing out the axle nut and punching in the end, and unbolting UCA and LCA, move the knuckle assembly with the caliper rotor still on it. Just brace it up with something. Less stuff to remove is always preferred when you're not in the comfort of a garage. I say this but have never replaced CV on the bronco but there certainly looks like enough clearance to do this.

Replacing an axle seems like a lot of work as described above!! I replaced the left front axle on my son’s GX470 a couple of weeks ago, literally took me 15 minutes on a lift. Pulled the wheel off, spun the 35mm outer nut off, separated the lower ball joint from the knuckle (2 bolts, very nice Toyota design!), unbolted the anti-sway bar endlink from the knuckle, pulled the knuckle out a bit to tap on the outer CV to loosen it, pushed the outer joint out of the hub, popped the inner joint out of the diff, and slid the axle out. Reinstallation was the reverse. Toughest part was getting the inner joint to pop back into the diff, after that if all bolted right back together. I was impressed at how easily this 21-year-old NY vehicle came apart and went back together! The next time I rotate the tires I’ll take a closer look at the front suspension to plan for replacing axles.

Took me 3-4 hours to get the old CV out on my m190, lots of swearing and beating to get the diff end to pop out. Apparently it's easier on the m210, I have heard.

20 minutes to get the new one back in.

As much work as it is, sometimes it still beats hiking miles back to the trailhead to either get cell service or hope you can flag someone down and get them to stop.

I’ve been corrected on here before about how easy it is to pull the CV. 210 is easy, but the 190 is allegedly a biiiiiiiiiitch. And you have confirmed it.
