and I love the style and personality of the Bronco.
and this is why you don't give a hoot about the fuel usage. I know I don't.

BTW, sport mode seems to do a better job for us than does eco.

So, I’ll share my experience as to why I think 25 mpg is possible. I have a 22 basemansquatch that I drove on a 1650 mile road trip from Las Vegas through mountains into the ND averaging 68 mph (24 hours with engine running for 1650 miles) and got 19.6 mpg overall. A lot of the driving was in excess of 80 mph. Around town I regularly get 21-22 mpg and use 10% ethanol fuel. If I had smaller tires and used ethanol free fuel I would probably be creeping toward 24 mpg. Overinflate tires and a couple other hypermiling tricks would probably net your 25mpg goal.

I owned 2 Broncos.. Both 2 door with the 2.7 engine. The Non-squatch Big Bend averaged 22 mpg over a range of 36,000 miles. 50/50 city highway. The sasquatch with Badlands frame is getting 19.7 average... If I really try I can eek out 19.8, ... Both only used 93 premium gas.
So if milage is that important I would not get the Sasquatch and/or the Badlands model. (heavy plates under). Good luck with you purchase.. I love mine and it has been a lot of fun :) I don't think 25 Mpg is possible without a LOT of weight reduction and maybe gearing changes??? On a good note I found in my own opinion.. The Non-Sasquatch model was so much more fun to drive on the roads. 'There are a lot of current deals out there on the leftover 24 models and may be able to score a deal on one of those.
Good luck!

We’ve got an outer banks with the 2.7 and the best tank we’ve calculated was 23.3 over 24,000 miles so far. We pretty much always use the normal mode and live reasonably rural. We drive a lot of 40-50 mph without many stop lights and see 22mpg fairly often on 87 with 10% ethenol fuel. 25 would be pretty difficult to achieve. Running average is 20.5 including all the highway miles and winter time drops in mileage. We do have the 4.27 rear gear however.

Ok, I might get some flack for this, but: I'm looking at picking up a '25 Bronco Outer Banks, but am concerned with MPG.
I would likely get a higher end intake system (Roush or K&N), look into weight-saving parts I can swap out, and drive in Eco Mode as much as possible with a light foot.

Has anyone else tried improving their Bronco's MPG, and if so, what were your results? I've love to be able to get around 25 MPG, but I have a feeling that's not possible.

Thanks!!
If you want good gas mileage, this is the wrong vehicle. Seriously.

What's the reasoning as to why the non sas bronco was more fun to drive? I'm genuinely curious! I had a 21 base (4 door) 2.7 and hardtop and loved driving that on the road. I'm waiting for delivery of a 25 HE 2.7 4 door

I was getting 22/23 mpg in my 2-door base with manual trans and 315/70R17 tires. But that was with careful driving on a highway trip, where I smartly used shifting and acceleration on mostly flat land. Around town I get 20mpg or more. (Note - that's the Bronco dash talking, I really should try a hand calculated test.)

Along with terrain I think it comes down to driving style and weight. The way some folks race from one stoplight to the next in my area, it's like they have stock in Exon and Midas Brake Shop. And there can be nearly a 1000lbs weight difference between my Bronco and the most loaded 4-door versions.

Stay out of the turbo.

Put smaller tires on it.

That's it, and it's. not going to amount to much.

Perhaps the Bronco Sport or Toyota Land Cruiser might be more your speed?
No, there is actually more to do. Maximize cruise control, drive the speed limit, maximize start/stop, no jack rabbit starts or accelerating to red lights or stop signs. During the first 8000 miles on my raptor, I achieved 17.9 mpg.

I think it is possible and good topic. I average 22.7 in my 2 door Basesquatch 2.7 now with 12.5K miles on it. The Bronco is a brick but there are some factors that do help from my experience driving the Bronco and reading this forum.

-Lighter weight = better MPG. So 2 door will get better than 4 door.
-Base 2 door with small tires and manual transmission has the best opportunity to get maximum MPG- I have read 30.
-Very light foot- 68 MPH max on the interstate
-Flat roads with minimal wind
-38-39 PSI in the tires
-Lighter weight wheels for less unsprung weight. Sas wheels are heavy. The stock Good years are good for MPG- they are lighter than most tires that size.

And here's what I wonder and I am considering for my Bronco- Rousch intake and axle back exhaust. Or a full CAT back. I wonder if I can get up to 24 or 25 MPG average up from my 22.7 in my 2 door. I also thinking about lighter wheels too- with the stock Goodyears. Get all this while I'm still working.......

Why am I doing this for a brick when I could buy a Prius or EV (LOL)? I absolutely LOVE my Bronco. I'm ready to go into retirement after working 50 years never missing a beat- will be living on SSC and a part time job where every penny counts for gas money and I don't want to give up my Bronco. It's low to insure- less than some crappy good MPG cars, it's paid for and I worked way too hard to give up what is most important to me. So I wonder if a few of you out there are in the same boat as me.......

Why not just get something significantly more suited to your primary need (space and MPG) instead of neutering a perfectly good offroader and making it a dork-mobile trying to eke out incredibly marginal/trivial gains for mileage? When Grandpa tells you he got 25mpg in his 6th gen he didn't have any fun doing it i promise

What kind of driving do you usually do? If it's a lot of around town stop and go, then you'll never get 20 mpg with it. If it's open road in the 45-60 mph speed limit range then it's possible to get 21-23 mpg. Getting rid of the stock muffler with either an axleback or catback exhaust will help some.
A combo of around town (maybe 80%) and the rest is longer hauls of 600 miles round trip for projects.

Great advice on the exhaust - thanks, Jeff!

Love all that, thanks!

And yes: I know I will LOVE the Bronco, which is why I have my eyes on it despite the poor MPG. Just looking for ways to stretch my dollar and be more environmentally friendly, since there's no PHEV powertrain yet. =\

Congrats in advance on your upcoming retirement!
