How do the 270 freestanding do in 15+ winds?
Even the Freestanding ones need to be strapped down as any awning is going to act like a kite.

One of the important considerations that most folks don’t think about when buying an awning is the availability of getting parts easily when something breaks, and something will always break.

Here’s an Alu-cab Shadow Awning that wasn’t tied down, nor the legs deployed and a gust of wind came out of nowhere:

Lesson learned. OK4WD sent us two new arms for less than $100 (pre pandemic), drilled out some rivets and riveted the new arms on. If parts weren’t available a $1500 awning would of gone into a landfill.

I have a Rhino Batwing awning that was tied down and two of the arms bent the first trip I took it on in the prarie of Montana in 2019. At the time Rhino wouldn’t sell me new arms, they only would sell replacement plastic pieces. I used it for parts to give away when someone else’s Batwing needed parts.

Well next time I'm on the island, I may see if they'll allow me to test fit brackets or something. I need my gutters lol
That can be arranged... Send me a photo of the rain gutters with the top down

It's great to hear all the feedback on these awnings!

Stories on what to get. What not to get. And what you all consider a value vs what's a waste.

Keep em coming!

That looks like it has a ton of coverage area.
It definitely has a large coverage area. I was originally going to purchase the OVS 270 LT with 80 sq ft coverage but I decided to get the bigger one at 129 sq ft of coverage. I’m so glad I did.

Who's rocking a roof-mounted awning on their Bronco? What brand/type are you running and why does it reign supreme?

Let's hear your thoughts in the comments! Brownie points for sharing pictures.
Rocking the Kammock crosswing 7 ft awning. Use it for camping, the beach, tailgating and hanging out between games for youth sports outdoors. Despite some of the cons it’s one of the items I use on my bronco almost every weekend and well worth the price.

Pros:
Incredibly quick and easy to deploy
Sleek, turnkey design with no outer bag
Sturdy - don’t need poles unless it’s super windy

Cons:
Expensive
Wish they made a bigger size to fit more people underneath
Would love it in a matte black color

I've got the Goal Zero 270 and it's pretty awesome. It has support poles, but they're not necessary if it's not windy. I also have walls, however, it turns out that I've never used them.

Can I see how you attached it to the aspen lite?
Finally getting back to you on this. These pics are from underneath looking up at the bottom of the RTT. There are a bunch of slats going across that make up the bottom frame. You have to undo the tie-down straps to loosen up the actual tent fabric/mattress and lift it up to get access to the slats. I drilled holes in the slats and attached the awning bracket to them. I spaced out 5 brackets to hold the awning.

I was able to lift the awning up and line up all the screws etc by myself. Definitely a two person job.

Drawback is it is tough getting the side clips of the RTT cover connected with the awning in place. You can't completely pull the cover down around the bottom as the bracket is in the way.

When I deploy the tent I leave the cover on anyway, attached with the two front clips.

Hope this helps.

Kelty Highroads shelter.

- More wind & rain protection than traditional awning.
- Doesn’t burden the vehicle full time, very compact & lightweight.
- Can be mounted off the rear or side of the vehicle, but the rear is best.
- beefy aluminum poles
- side walls can be toggled up or staked down if the weather gets nasty.

Chevy is my buddies old truck when we went to the Dollhouse last year.

https://trailgearoasis.com/ - I'd have one of these if I didn't a roof rack and M2M attic shelf already. Stows inside on the roll bar, lightweight, and covers most of my use cases of a quick stop to chill for a half hour or so before moving on.
